ProbeLabs65 findings · 95 requirements

A proof layer — requirements, tests and verified fixes — for two of Omarchy's subsystems: the application menu (launcher scripts, QML model, JSONC config, search and selection) and the lock screen (lock scripts, QML, PAM authentication). Scope is deliberately limited to those components of omacom/omarchy; the rest of the distribution is not covered.

Original report

Hybrid Intel+NVIDIA laptops without supergfxctl: forced __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia with no PRIME offload breaks Steam gamingrevision 1 · captured 2026-09-28 21:24 UTC via poll

System details

Intel Raptor Lake iGPU (i915) + NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060 Max-Q (nvidia-open-dkms 610.57.04, GSP firmware), Omarchy 4.0.2, hybrid laptop without supergfxctl/MUX (ASUS)

What's wrong?

On hybrid Intel+NVIDIA laptops that don't use supergfxctl (no ASUS MUX support), Steam/Proton games never get routed to the discrete GPU — the RTX stays idle (0% util in nvidia-smi) during gameplay, and games freeze or run at low FPS on the Intel iGPU instead.

Root cause, traced through Omarchy's own scripts:

  • default/hypr/nvidia.lua sets __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia and NVD_BACKEND=direct session-wide whenever omarchy-hw-nvidia + omarchy-hw-nvidia-gsp succeed — i.e. whenever any NVIDIA GPU with GSP firmware is present. It never checks whether the system is hybrid.
  • Omarchy does have a hybrid-GPU detector, bin/omarchy-hw-hybrid-gpu (falls back to counting VGA/3D controllers via lspci when supergfxctl isn't installed), but it's only consulted by omarchy-toggle-hybrid-gpu for showing/hiding a menu entry. nvidia.lua never calls it.
  • There is no PRIME render-offload story anywhere in the Omarchy tree (no prime-run/DRI_PRIME/__NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD wrapper, no per-app Vulkan device selection, no Steam launch-option documentation) for hybrid laptops that aren't handled via supergfxd's full GPU-mode switching.

I confirmed this on my own hybrid laptop by reading the actual session environment new processes inherit:

$ systemctl --user show-environment | grep -E "GLX|NVD|LIBVA"
LIBVA_DRIVER_NAME=iHD # I already had to override Omarchy's default back to iHD myself — forcing NVIDIA video decode caused Chrome/YouTube flicker on this hybrid setup
NVD_BACKEND=direct
__GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia

So the compositor session is forced onto the NVIDIA GLX vendor lib globally, but nothing tells Steam/Proton (mostly Vulkan) which GPU to actually use per-game, and there's no offload wrapper to force a game onto the dGPU on demand. The practical result for gaming: unreliable GPU selection, no dGPU utilization, freezes/low FPS.

Related but distinct: #9678 (RTX 5060 laptop stuck at default power limit) — different root cause (nvidia-powerd/TGP), same symptom family of "dGPU not delivering real gaming performance on hybrid/MUX laptops."

Suggested direction

  • Have nvidia.lua consult omarchy-hw-hybrid-gpu before forcing __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME/NVD_BACKEND to nvidia, so hybrid systems default compositor rendering to the iGPU instead of forcing NVIDIA session-wide.
  • Ship a prime-run-style wrapper (or documented Steam launch option, e.g. __NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1 __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia __VK_LAYER_NV_optimus=NVIDIA_only %command%) for hybrid laptops without supergfxctl, so games can be explicitly routed to the dGPU.

Happy to test a patch on this hardware if useful.

Intel Raptor Lake iGPU (i915) + NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060 Max-Q (nvidia-open-dkms 610.57.04, GSP firmware), Omarchy 4.0.2, hybrid laptop without supergfxctl/MUX (ASUS)

### What's wrong?

On hybrid Intel+NVIDIA laptops that don't use `supergfxctl` (no ASUS MUX support), Steam/Proton games never get routed to the discrete GPU — the RTX stays idle (0% util in `nvidia-smi`) during gameplay, and games freeze or run at low FPS on the Intel iGPU instead.

Root cause, traced through Omarchy's own scripts:

- `default/hypr/nvidia.lua` sets `__GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia` and `NVD_BACKEND=direct` **session-wide** whenever `omarchy-hw-nvidia` + `omarchy-hw-nvidia-gsp` succeed — i.e. whenever any NVIDIA GPU with GSP firmware is present. It never checks whether the system is hybrid.
- Omarchy *does* have a hybrid-GPU detector, `bin/omarchy-hw-hybrid-gpu` (falls back to counting VGA/3D controllers via lspci when `supergfxctl` isn't installed), but it's only consulted by `omarchy-toggle-hybrid-gpu` for showing/hiding a menu entry. `nvidia.lua` never calls it.
- There is no PRIME render-offload story anywhere in the Omarchy tree (no `prime-run`/`DRI_PRIME`/`__NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD` wrapper, no per-app Vulkan device selection, no Steam launch-option documentation) for hybrid laptops that aren't handled via `supergfxd`'s full GPU-mode switching.

I confirmed this on my own hybrid laptop by reading the actual session environment new processes inherit:

```
$ systemctl --user show-environment | grep -E "GLX|NVD|LIBVA"
LIBVA_DRIVER_NAME=iHD          # I already had to override Omarchy's default back to iHD myself — forcing NVIDIA video decode caused Chrome/YouTube flicker on this hybrid setup
NVD_BACKEND=direct
__GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia
```

### Suggested direction
- Have `nvidia.lua` consult `omarchy-hw-hybrid-gpu` before forcing `__GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME`/`NVD_BACKEND` to nvidia, so hybrid systems default compositor rendering to the iGPU instead of forcing NVIDIA session-wide.
- Ship a `prime-run`-style wrapper (or documented Steam launch option, e.g. `__NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1 __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia __VK_LAYER_NV_optimus=NVIDIA_only %command%`) for hybrid laptops without `supergfxctl`, so games can be explicitly routed to the dGPU.

Happy to test a patch on this hardware if useful.
