Omarchy

ProbeLabs65 findings · 95 requirements

A proof layer — requirements, tests and verified fixes — for two of Omarchy's subsystems: the application menu (launcher scripts, QML model, JSONC config, search and selection) and the lock screen (lock scripts, QML, PAM authentication). Scope is deliberately limited to those components of omacom/omarchy; the rest of the distribution is not covered.

Original report

Dictation bar indicator never shows the "transcribing" staterevision 1 · captured 2026-09-28 21:24 UTC via poll

Summary

The Dictation bar indicator (in omarchy.indicators) renders while voxtype is recording and disappears during the subsequent transcribing phase, leaving no visible feedback between releasing F9 and the text being typed/pasted.

This report was prepared by an AI coding assistant (opencode, MiniMax-M3) at the request of the human user filing the issue. I cross-checked existing issues on `omacom/omarchy` for duplicates before filing; the closest matches (#7900, #8674, #6823, #5474) describe different symptoms.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Install voxtype via omarchy install voxtype so the default F9 push-to-talk binding and the omarchy.indicators bar widget are both present.
  2. With omarchy.indicators in the bar (default), hold F9, speak a sentence, release.
  3. Watch the bar during the ~3–7 second transcription window.

Expected

The indicator stays visible in the active block and shows the spinner icon (󰔟) that the widget already defines for the transcribing state.

Actual

During recording the mic icon is highlighted in the active block. The moment voxtype stops recording and starts transcribing, the indicator disappears. The user has no visual cue that dictation is still being processed.

Root cause

shell/plugins/bar/indicators/Dictation.qml:11:

active: state === "recording"

Only recording is treated as active. The transcribing state is correctly parsed (line 20) and the right icon is selected (line 22, icon = "󰔟"), but because active is false, the indicator is routed to the inactive block, which is hidden by default (revealed only on hover, or when omarchy.indicators' alwaysShow is enabled). So the icon is set but never displayed.

Compare with shell/Ui/BarIndicator.qml:18:
inactiveRevealed: !effectiveActive && !!indicatorHost && indicatorHost.revealInactiveIndicators

Suggested fix

One-line change in Dictation.qml:11:

active: state === "recording" || state === "transcribing"

This makes both non-idle states go into the always-visible active block.

Evidence

voxtype status --follow --extended --format json (via omarchy-voxtype-status) emits the correct state stream — the indicator just doesn't react to transcribing. Excerpt from journalctl --user -u voxtype on a fresh dictation:

voxtype_osd_gtk4: showing (recording started)
Recording stopped (48.5s)
Transcribing 48.2s of audio... ← OSD hides here, bar indicator disappears too
whisper_full_with_state: auto-detected language: en (p = 0.944001)
Transcription completed in 6.93s
Text pasted via clipboard + ctrl+v (510 chars)

Workaround until fixed

Set alwaysShow: true on the omarchy.indicators widget entry in ~/.config/omarchy/shell.json — the dimmed spinner then stays visible during transcription, but loses the active-block highlighting that the recording state currently gets.

System details

  • Omarchy 4.0.2-1 (omarchy version) — Quattro branch
  • voxtype-bin 1.0.0-2
  • Hyprland 0.56.2
  • ThinkPad T14 Gen 3, Intel i7-1260P, Intel Alder Lake-P iGPU
  • Debug log: /tmp/omarchy-debug.log (run omarchy-debug --no-sudo --print)

Notes on capture

There's no visual to record for the absence of an icon; the evidence is the code path above plus the voxtype journal excerpt. Happy to attach a short screen recording of the indicator disappearing if it would help triage.
