Omarchy

ProbeLabs65 findings · 95 requirements

A proof layer — requirements, tests and verified fixes — for two of Omarchy's subsystems: the application menu (launcher scripts, QML model, JSONC config, search and selection) and the lock screen (lock scripts, QML, PAM authentication). Scope is deliberately limited to those components of omacom/omarchy; the rest of the distribution is not covered.

Original report

XCompose migrations restart fcitx5 and can crash running Steamrevision 1 · captured 2026-09-28 21:24 UTC via poll

System details

  • Omarchy 4.0.2-1
  • Linux 7.1.9-arch1-2, Hyprland 0.56.2-1
  • fcitx5 5.1.21-1, libx11 1.8.13-1, Xwayland 24.1.13-1
  • Steam 1.0.0.87-3

What's wrong?

Migration 1788102906.sh repaired ~/.XCompose and immediately ran omarchy-restart-xcompose, replacing fcitx5 while Steam was running.

The captured sequence was:

  • T+0: ~/.XCompose rewritten
  • T+5 ms: systemd began stopping omarchy-fcitx5.service
  • T+16 ms: fcitx5 unloaded its XIM addon
  • T+77 min: Steam's next logged notification-popup composition crashed steamwebhelper with SIGSEGV

The crashing thread was GL Composer Thr:

libX11.so.6!XCreateIC+0x11d
Steam-bundled libSDL3.so.0
steamwebhelper

The faulting XCreateIC instruction dereferenced an invalid XIM method-table entry. This matches Valve's existing stale-XIM crash:

https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/13362

Equivalent Steam notification popups worked before the fcitx5 restart and again after Steam restarted the helper. There was no corresponding OOM or GPU/kernel failure.

I captured one occurrence and did not deliberately reproduce it because that would intentionally crash Steam. The likely reproducer is:

  1. Leave Steam running.
  2. Run omarchy-restart-xcompose, as the migration does.
  3. Trigger a Steam desktop notification or another popup that creates a new X input context.

Expected

An update should not invalidate input-method objects held by running applications. The repaired compose configuration can safely take effect at the next graphical login.

Suggested fix

Do not invoke omarchy-restart-xcompose automatically from migrations. Rewrite the files and let the next graphical login load them.

PR #9282 currently invokes the restart from both its modified 1788102906.sh and its new migration, potentially exposing more running Steam sessions to the same failure.

The manual restart command can retain its explicit behavior; this report concerns automatic restarts during updates.

Steam automatically restarted the helper and no data was lost.

Full machine diagnostics and the core dump are intentionally not attached because they contain broad, potentially sensitive process and system information. Relevant versions and crash evidence are included above.

### What's wrong?

Migration `1788102906.sh` repaired `~/.XCompose` and immediately ran `omarchy-restart-xcompose`, replacing fcitx5 while Steam was running.

The captured sequence was:

- T+0: `~/.XCompose` rewritten

The crashing thread was `GL Composer Thr`:

The faulting `XCreateIC` instruction dereferenced an invalid XIM method-table entry. This matches Valve's existing stale-XIM crash:
