Omarchy

ProbeLabs65 findings · 95 requirements

A proof layer — requirements, tests and verified fixes — for two of Omarchy's subsystems: the application menu (launcher scripts, QML model, JSONC config, search and selection) and the lock screen (lock scripts, QML, PAM authentication). Scope is deliberately limited to those components of omacom/omarchy; the rest of the distribution is not covered.

Original report

Obsidian theme: Data Files Editor selection and active line ignore theme colorsrevision 1 · captured 2026-09-28 21:24 UTC via poll

System details

  • Omarchy 4.0.2-1
  • Obsidian 1.13.7-2
  • Data Files Editor 1.3.0
  • Omarchy theme: Tokyo Night

What's wrong?

The generated Omarchy Obsidian theme defines --text-selection and --text-normal, but selections in the Data Files Editor community plugin do not use those values. Data Files Editor creates a standalone CodeMirror 6 editor under .datafile-source-view.mod-cm6. Its selection layer retains CodeMirror's pale default background while the text inherits the Omarchy theme foreground, making selected text extremely low contrast and difficult to read.

The plugin also hard-codes its active-line gutter background to #aaeeff44, and CodeMirror's active line retains a similar pale cyan default. The cursor line therefore resembles the broken selection color and does not follow the active Omarchy palette.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Apply an Omarchy theme such as Tokyo Night.
  2. In Obsidian, select the generated Omarchy theme.
  3. Install and enable Data Files Editor.
  4. Open a .txt file and move the cursor between lines.
  5. Select several lines.

Expected: the selection and active line use distinct roles from the active Omarchy palette and remain readable.

Actual: the selection has a pale lavender background with pale text, while the active line and gutter use a similar hard-coded/default pale cyan.

Verified workaround

Adding the following as an Obsidian CSS snippet fixes both states:

.datafile-source-view.mod-cm6 {
  /* Approximates Omarchy's lighter_background role from exposed variables. */
  --datafile-active-line: color-mix(
    in srgb,
    var(--text-selection) 70%,
    var(--background-primary)
  );
}

.datafile-source-view.mod-cm6 .cm-selectionLayer .cm-selectionBackground {
  background-color: var(--text-selection) !important;
}

.datafile-source-view.mod-cm6 .cm-content ::selection {
  background-color: transparent !important;
  color: var(--text-normal) !important;
}

.datafile-source-view.mod-cm6 .cm-activeLine,
.datafile-source-view.mod-cm6 .cm-gutterElement.cm-activeLineGutter {
  background-color: var(--datafile-active-line) !important;
}

Rationale for including this in the Omarchy Obsidian theme template

  • It uses --text-selection, --text-normal, and --background-primary, variables the generated template already defines, rather than hard-coded colors.
  • The active-line mix closely matches Omarchy's semantic lighter_background editor role: with Tokyo Night it resolves to approximately #25283a, close to lighter_background (#24283b), while remaining distinct from selection (#292e42).
  • It automatically adapts whenever the user changes Omarchy themes.
  • It is narrowly scoped to Data Files Editor's standalone CM6 view, so it has no effect when that plugin is absent and does not alter Obsidian's normal Markdown editor.
  • It restores readable selection contrast and a clearly differentiated cursor line in a plugin used specifically to edit non-Markdown text files, complementing Omarchy's existing Obsidian integration.

The tested rule could be added to default/themed/obsidian.css.tpl.

- Obsidian 1.13.7-2
- Data Files Editor 1.3.0
- Omarchy theme: Tokyo Night

### What's wrong?

The generated Omarchy Obsidian theme defines `--text-selection` and `--text-normal`, but selections in the Data Files Editor community plugin do not use those values. Data Files Editor creates a standalone CodeMirror 6 editor under `.datafile-source-view.mod-cm6`. Its selection layer retains CodeMirror's pale default background while the text inherits the Omarchy theme foreground, making selected text extremely low contrast and difficult to read.

The plugin also hard-codes its active-line gutter background to `#aaeeff44`, and CodeMirror's active line retains a similar pale cyan default. The cursor line therefore resembles the broken selection color and does not follow the active Omarchy palette.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Apply an Omarchy theme such as Tokyo Night.
2. In Obsidian, select the generated **Omarchy** theme.
3. Install and enable **Data Files Editor**.
4. Open a `.txt` file and move the cursor between lines.
5. Select several lines.

Expected: the selection and active line use distinct roles from the active Omarchy palette and remain readable.

Actual: the selection has a pale lavender background with pale text, while the active line and gutter use a similar hard-coded/default pale cyan.

### Verified workaround

Adding the following as an Obsidian CSS snippet fixes both states:

```css
.datafile-source-view.mod-cm6 {
  /* Approximates Omarchy's lighter_background role from exposed variables. */
  --datafile-active-line: color-mix(
    in srgb,
    var(--text-selection) 70%,
    var(--background-primary)
  );
}
.datafile-source-view.mod-cm6 .cm-selectionLayer .cm-selectionBackground {
  background-color: var(--text-selection) !important;
}
.datafile-source-view.mod-cm6 .cm-content ::selection {
  background-color: transparent !important;
  color: var(--text-normal) !important;
}
.datafile-source-view.mod-cm6 .cm-activeLine,
.datafile-source-view.mod-cm6 .cm-gutterElement.cm-activeLineGutter {
  background-color: var(--datafile-active-line) !important;
}
```

### Rationale for including this in the Omarchy Obsidian theme template

- It uses `--text-selection`, `--text-normal`, and `--background-primary`, variables the generated template already defines, rather than hard-coded colors.
- The active-line mix closely matches Omarchy's semantic `lighter_background` editor role: with Tokyo Night it resolves to approximately `#25283a`, close to `lighter_background` (`#24283b`), while remaining distinct from selection (`#292e42`).
- It automatically adapts whenever the user changes Omarchy themes.
- It is narrowly scoped to Data Files Editor's standalone CM6 view, so it has no effect when that plugin is absent and does not alter Obsidian's normal Markdown editor.
- It restores readable selection contrast and a clearly differentiated cursor line in a plugin used specifically to edit non-Markdown text files, complementing Omarchy's existing Obsidian integration.

The tested rule could be added to `default/themed/obsidian.css.tpl`.
