Original report
What's wrong?
On YouTube (youtube.com/watch), everything outside the video player itself (description, buttons, comments, recommended sidebar, subscribe button, etc.) fails to paint/update. The video plays and updates fine, but the surrounding UI stays blank/stale until the page is manually reloaded (or occasionally after a resize/mouseover forces a repaint). This is not limited to a single video and recurs on a fresh reload after some scrolling/interaction.
This looks like the same class of Chromium paint/damage-tracking regression as #5354 (fixed upstream in 147.0.7727.101+), but reintroduced/still present on a much later Chromium build.
System details
- Omarchy: dev (28ceaae7)
- Kernel: 7.2.5-4-omarchy
- Chromium: 153.0.8010.52 Arch Linux
- GPU: Intel Iris Xe Graphics (Raptor Lake-P), no NVIDIA / not a hybrid-GPU laptop
intel-media-driver26.2.4-1 installed, mesa 26.2.3-1- chrome://gpu Graphics Feature Status: Compositing, Rasterization, Canvas, Video Decode, WebGL, WebGPU all "Hardware accelerated"
Steps to reproduce
- Open any YouTube watch page in Omarchy's bundled Chromium.
- Play the video, scroll around, interact with the page for a bit (switch tabs, resize, etc.)
- Content outside the video frame (description, comments, sidebar) stops updating / appears blank.
- Manual reload (F5) temporarily fixes it until it recurs.
What I tried (both made things worse, not better)
- Added
--disable-gpu-compositingto~/.config/chromium-flags.conf— did not fix the blank-UI issue; video became choppy afterward. - Added
render { direct_scanout = false }to~/.config/hypr/hyprland.conf(Hyprland damage-tracking workaround from related Wayland/chromium flicker threads) — combined with #1, UI elements disappeared even further (only scrollbar visible) and video got very choppy.
Both changes have been reverted; back to stock config, which reproduces the original (milder) blank-until-reload symptom.
Expected
Non-video UI elements on YouTube (and likely other dynamic pages) should repaint normally without requiring a manual reload.
