Omarchy

ProbeLabs65 findings · 95 requirements

A proof layer — requirements, tests and verified fixes — for two of Omarchy's subsystems: the application menu (launcher scripts, QML model, JSONC config, search and selection) and the lock screen (lock scripts, QML, PAM authentication). Scope is deliberately limited to those components of omacom/omarchy; the rest of the distribution is not covered.

Original report

Shell (Qt/Quickshell) can't decode WebP images — black lock screen & blank previews; qt6-imageformats not a dependencyrevision 1 · captured 2026-09-28 21:24 UTC via poll

What happened

Any WebP image used by the Omarchy shell silently fails to render:

  • Lock screen shows a solid black background instead of the wallpaper when the current background is .webp
  • Thumbnails/previews in shell plugin panels (wallpaper pickers etc.) are blank for .webp

The desktop shows the same wallpaper fine because Hyprland's wallpaper daemon decodes WebP independently of Qt — which makes this confusing to diagnose ("wallpaper works, so why is the lock screen black?").

Root cause

omarchy-shell runs on Qt6/Quickshell; QML Image relies on codec plugins in /usr/lib/qt6/plugins/imageformats/. On a stock install that directory only contains gif/ico/jpeg/pdf/svg — there is no libqwebp.so, because qt6-imageformats is not in the omarchy package's dependencies:

$ ls /usr/lib/qt6/plugins/imageformats/
libqgif.so libqico.so libqjpeg.so libqpdf.so libqsvg.so

Steps to reproduce

  1. Save any WebP image, e.g. ~/Pictures/wall.webp
  2. omarchy theme bg set ~/Pictures/wall.webp — accepted without error, desktop updates fine
  3. omarchy system lock → solid black background behind the lock design

Same file shows blank thumbnails/previews in Qt-based plugin panels.

Verified fix

sudo pacman -S qt6-imageformats
omarchy restart shell

Every previously invisible WebP then renders correctly everywhere (lock screen included). No other changes needed.

Suggested fix

Add qt6-imageformats to the dependency list of the omarchy package (~1.7 MiB installed, pulls jasper + libmng).
