Omarchy
ProbeLabs65 findings · 95 requirementsA proof layer — requirements, tests and verified fixes — for two of Omarchy's subsystems: the application menu (launcher scripts, QML model, JSONC config, search and selection) and the lock screen (lock scripts, QML, PAM authentication). Scope is deliberately limited to those components of omacom/omarchy; the rest of the distribution is not covered.

Original report
System
- ASUS ProArt P16 H7606WM: Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 (Radeon 890M iGPU) + RTX 5070 Laptop (GB206)
- Omarchy 4.0.0.alpha, Hyprland
- Displays: internal panel, one monitor on the HDMI port (wired to the NVIDIA dGPU), one on USB-C → HDMI (iGPU)
What happensdefault/hypr/nvidia.lua sets LIBVA_DRIVER_NAME=nvidia (plus NVD_BACKEND=direct) session-wide whenever the NVIDIA GPU has GSP firmware. On a hybrid laptop, Firefox then tries to decode video through the NVIDIA VA-API driver, fails, and falls back to decoding on the CPU. about:support still lists hardware decoding as supported for every codec, even though it isn't actually used.
Measured while playing a YouTube livestream in Firefox:
LIBVA_DRIVER_NAME=nvidia (default) | LIBVA_DRIVER_NAME=radeonsi | |
|---|---|---|
| Firefox RDD (decoder) process | ~44 % CPU | ~5 % CPU |
| NVIDIA dGPU | P5, ~11.7 W | P8, ~4–7 W |
| CPU temperature | ~58 °C | ~49 °C (−9 °C) |
The extra heat is enough to keep the laptop fans audibly spinning.
Steps to reproduce
1. Run Omarchy on a hybrid AMD iGPU + NVIDIA (GSP) laptop.
2. Play a video in Firefox and watch RDD Process in htop.
3. Close Firefox, run LIBVA_DRIVER_NAME=radeonsi firefox, and play the same video. Decoder CPU usage drops sharply.
Expected
On hybrid laptops, video decoding should default to the iGPU (the device driving the desktop), not the discrete NVIDIA card.
Suggestion
Only set LIBVA_DRIVER_NAME=nvidia / NVD_BACKEND when the NVIDIA GPU is the only (or primary) GPU. On hybrid systems, leave them unset so libva picks the iGPU's driver. Apps that really want NVIDIA decoding can opt in per app.
Workaround
A wrapper at ~/.local/bin/firefox containing LIBVA_DRIVER_NAME=radeonsi exec /usr/lib/firefox/firefox "$@", plus a user copy of firefox.desktop whose Exec= lines point to it.
Diagnosed and written up with Claude Code; measurements taken on my machine.
