ProbeLabs65 findings · 95 requirements

A proof layer — requirements, tests and verified fixes — for two of Omarchy's subsystems: the application menu (launcher scripts, QML model, JSONC config, search and selection) and the lock screen (lock scripts, QML, PAM authentication). Scope is deliberately limited to those components of omacom/omarchy; the rest of the distribution is not covered.

Original report

MacBookPro11,1 internal Apple SD reader (05ac:8406) disappears after S3 suspendrevision 1 · captured 2026-09-28 21:24 UTC via poll

System details

Apple MacBookPro11,1 (2013–2014 13" Retina), Intel Core i5-4308U, Intel HD 5000 (i915), Omarchy 4.0.0-1, Hyprland 0.56.2, kernel 7.1.8-arch1-3.

What's wrong?

The built-in Apple SDXC reader enumerates at boot as USB SuperSpeed 05ac:8406 (“Apple Card Reader”) on usb 2-3 and appears as a SCSI disk (sdb). After S3 suspend/resume the SuperSpeed port stays dead (usb2-port3 state=not attached). The reader does not come back until a full reboot.

This is a long-standing Intel Haswell xHCI + Apple 05ac:8406 issue. Reporting it because Omarchy currently has no workaround, and with udisks auto-mount the drop corrupts mounted filesystems on the card.

Expected: after lid close/open (or systemctl suspend), the internal reader still enumerates and the card stays a disk.

Actual: the device is present after boot; after one S3 cycle it is gone. lsblk only shows the internal SSD.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Install Omarchy 4.0 on a MacBookPro11,1.
  2. Insert an SD card. At boot the kernel attaches sdb (here: 128 GB, partitions auto-mounted under /run/media/$USER/...).
  3. Suspend (lid close) and resume.
  4. Reader is gone until reboot.

This boot (2026-08-21)

Quirks were on the cmdline after a UKI rebuild:

usbcore.quirks=05ac:8406:km
xhci_hcd.quirks=0x1000080

Live xHCI quirks: 0x104b890 (includes XHCI_RESET_ON_RESUME bit 7 and XHCI_MISSING_CAS bit 24).

Boot: reader works, card auto-mounted (ext4 + FAT).

usb 2-3: New USB device found, idVendor=05ac, idProduct=8406
scsi 1:0:0:0: Direct-Access APPLE SD Card Reader 3.00
sd 1:0:0:0: [sdb] 249670656 512-byte logical blocks
EXT4-fs (sdb3): mounted filesystem ...

~40s later, S3:

PM: suspend entry (deep)
usb usb1: root hub lost power or was reset
usb usb2: root hub lost power or was reset
# USB2 devices reset (YubiKey, keyboard/trackpad, Bluetooth)
# SuperSpeed reader is NOT reset/re-enumerated
sd 1:0:0:0: [sdb] tag#0 FAILED Result: hostbyte=DID_ERROR
I/O error, dev sdb, sector ... op 0x1:(WRITE)
sdb: detected capacity change from 249670656 to 0
usb usb2-port3: Cannot enable. Maybe the USB cable is bad?
usb 2-3: USB disconnect, device number 2
EXT4-fs (sdb3): shut down requested (2)

udisks then cleaned up mount points that no longer exist (boot, userdata, vendor, metadata).

Workarounds that did not restore the reader after S3

  • USB3 port disable/enable on usb2-port3
  • usb2 hub authorized toggle
  • Unbind/bind xhci_hcd on 0000:00:14.0 (USB2 devices came back; SuperSpeed reader did not)
  • PCI function reset of the xHCI device (/sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:00:14.0/reset is not usable / EPERM)
  • usbcore.quirks=05ac:8406:km (NO_LPM + DISCONNECT_SUSPEND)
  • xhci_hcd.quirks=0x1000080 (MISSING_CAS | RESET_ON_RESUME)

A reboot always brings the reader back.

/etc/systemd/system-sleep/apple-sd-reader was installed to echo 1 > .../remove on pre; journalctl -t apple-sd-reader had no entries for this suspend (hook may not have run, or logger output was not captured).

Suggested Omarchy-side mitigations (kernel is unlikely to fix Haswell)

  1. Before suspend: unmount any 05ac:8406 / sdb filesystems, then unbind/remove the USB device so journals are not aborted on resume.
  2. udev: stock udisks tags 05ac:8403 as ID_DRIVE_FLASH_SD but not 05ac:8406 (/usr/lib/udev/rules.d/80-udisks2.rules).
  3. Docs: MacBookPro11,x internal reader does not survive S3 on Linux; reboot to recover.

Hardware IDs

  • USB: 05ac:8406 Apple Card Reader, SuperSpeed, usb 2-3
  • xHCI: Intel 8 Series 0000:00:14.0 (8086:9c31), driver xhci_hcd (builtin)
  • No PCI MMC/SDHCI host; this slot is USB-only

omarchy-debug --no-sudo --print output is on the machine at /tmp/omarchy-debug.log (Omarchy 4.0.0-1). Happy to attach more kernel logs.

### What's wrong?

The built-in Apple SDXC reader enumerates at boot as USB SuperSpeed `05ac:8406` (“Apple Card Reader”) on `usb 2-3` and appears as a SCSI disk (`sdb`). After **S3 suspend/resume** the SuperSpeed port stays dead (`usb2-port3 state=not attached`). The reader does not come back until a full reboot.

This is a long-standing Intel Haswell xHCI + Apple 05ac:8406 issue. Reporting it because Omarchy currently has no workaround, and with udisks auto-mount the drop **corrupts mounted filesystems** on the card.

**Expected:** after lid close/open (or `systemctl suspend`), the internal reader still enumerates and the card stays a disk.

**Actual:** the device is present after boot; after one S3 cycle it is gone. `lsblk` only shows the internal SSD.

### Steps to reproduce

1. Install Omarchy 4.0 on a MacBookPro11,1.
2. Insert an SD card. At boot the kernel attaches `sdb` (here: 128 GB, partitions auto-mounted under `/run/media/$USER/...`).
3. Suspend (lid close) and resume.
4. Reader is gone until reboot.

Quirks *were* on the cmdline after a UKI rebuild:

```
```

Live xHCI quirks: `0x104b890` (includes `XHCI_RESET_ON_RESUME` bit 7 and `XHCI_MISSING_CAS` bit 24).

Boot: reader works, card auto-mounted (ext4 + FAT).

```
```

~40s later, S3:

```
PM: suspend entry (deep)
udisks then cleaned up mount points that no longer exist (`boot`, `userdata`, `vendor`, `metadata`).
### Workarounds that did **not** restore the reader after S3
- USB3 port disable/enable on `usb2-port3`
- `usb2` hub `authorized` toggle
- Unbind/bind `xhci_hcd` on `0000:00:14.0` (USB2 devices came back; SuperSpeed reader did not)
- PCI function reset of the xHCI device (`/sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:00:14.0/reset` is not usable / EPERM)
- `usbcore.quirks=05ac:8406:km` (`NO_LPM` + `DISCONNECT_SUSPEND`)
- `xhci_hcd.quirks=0x1000080` (`MISSING_CAS` | `RESET_ON_RESUME`)
A **reboot** always brings the reader back.
`/etc/systemd/system-sleep/apple-sd-reader` was installed to `echo 1 > .../remove` on `pre`; `journalctl -t apple-sd-reader` had **no entries** for this suspend (hook may not have run, or logger output was not captured).
