Omarchy

ProbeLabs65 findings · 95 requirements

A proof layer — requirements, tests and verified fixes — for two of Omarchy's subsystems: the application menu (launcher scripts, QML model, JSONC config, search and selection) and the lock screen (lock scripts, QML, PAM authentication). Scope is deliberately limited to those components of omacom/omarchy; the rest of the distribution is not covered.

Apple Silicon regression: top bar no longer reserves the camera notchrevision 1 · captured 2026-09-28 21:23 UTC via poll

Environment

  • Omarchy: 4.0.4-mac.1 (omarchy-dev 4.0.4.r7081.gca187b0-1, omarchy-quattro-bundle=ca187b0…)
  • Package source: https://github.com/maralcbr/omarchy-mx-mac
  • Hardware: 2021 16-inch MacBook Pro, M1 Pro (MacBookPro18,1 / J316)
  • Kernel: linux-asahi 7.1.13.asahi3-2
  • Internal display: eDP-1, 3456x2234 at 120 Hz, scale 2
  • Notch strip enabled: appledrm show_notch=1 (/etc/modprobe.d/asahi-notch.conf)
  • Measured cutout for this panel: 64 physical rows → 32 logical px at scale 2 (full 16:10 leftover strip is 37 logical px)

Regression

With the bar at the default top position, the physical camera notch covers part of the menu bar (and the default center widgets sit directly under it). The same machine did not have this issue on omarchy 4.0.2-2.

This is not only a height default — the whole Apple Silicon notch stack is missing from the installed package, while it still exists upstream on the omarchy-mac Quattro branch.

Missing code (verified against /usr/share/omarchy on this machine)

hyprctl monitors confirmed reserved: 0 26 0 0 at package defaults — only the normal 26px bar, no notch floor.

Height alone is not enough

Even with a taller bar, default center widgets are vertically centered in the bar and still land under the cutout (~32 logical px tall, ~center of the panel). The previous good state had both:

  1. top-bar floor ≥ cutout height
  2. empty center / side layout (clock etc. on the right)

The 4.0.2 package had (1); the Quattro mac defaults also ship (2). This build has neither.

Expected

On Apple Silicon laptops with a display notch:

  1. Top bar height is floored to the panel cutout (BarModel.notchHeight / measured rows), with optional [bar] notch-height calibration.
  2. Default bar layout keeps the center clear of the camera housing.

Actual

Bar is fixed at barSize (26px default). Center section holds clock + indicators + weather under the notch. Notch physically covers bar UI.

Workaround (applied locally, not a fix)

In ~/.config/omarchy/shell.toml:

[bar]
size-horizontal = 34

In ~/.config/omarchy/shell.json: empty layout.center, set centerAnchor to "", move those widgets to right.

After that: reserved: 0 34 0 0 and nothing under the camera. This only papers over the missing package code; theme switches / omarchy bar defaults can regress it.

Suggested fix

Port the full notch stack from omarchy-mac Quattro into this package (or stop dropping it on rebase):

  • Bar.qml: Apple Silicon probe + notchFloor using Style.bar.notchHeight or BarModel.notchHeight(...)
  • BarModel.js: notchHeight + measured panel table (incl. 3456x2234 → 64)
  • Style.qml: accept raw [bar] notch-height
  • config/omarchy/shell.json: ship the notch-friendly default layout (empty center)

Relevant upstream commits on omarchy-mac: d26f913 (34px + side layout), 966dcd3 (dynamic floor), 74ef816 (measured cutout + calibrated override).

## Regression

With the bar at the default top position, the physical camera notch covers part of the menu bar (and the default center widgets sit directly under it). The same machine did not have this issue on `omarchy 4.0.2-2`.

This is not only a height default — **the whole Apple Silicon notch stack is missing** from the installed package, while it still exists upstream on the omarchy-mac Quattro branch.

## Missing code (verified against `/usr/share/omarchy` on this machine)

| Piece | Role | Installed | omarchy-mac `quattro` |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| `shell/plugins/bar/Bar.qml` — `appleSiliconHost` + `notchFloor` | Floor top-bar height at the cutout: `implicitHeight: Math.max(root.barSize, notchFloor)` | **absent** (`implicitHeight` is just `root.barSize`) | present |
| `shell/plugins/bar/BarModel.js` — `notchHeight()` + `measuredNotchPanels` | Derive cutout height from panel geometry / measured rows (MBP 16" `3456x2234` → 64 rows) | **absent** (file has no `notch*` symbols) | present |
| `shell/Commons/Style.qml` — `Style.bar.notchHeight` / `[bar] notch-height` | Calibrated override in `shell.toml` (raw px, does not scale with font) | **absent** | present |
| `config/omarchy/shell.json` defaults — empty `center`, `centerAnchor: ""` | Notch-friendly side layout so clock/indicators/weather are not under the camera | **absent** — default puts `omarchy.clock` etc. in `center` with `centerAnchor: "omarchy.clock"` | present (empty center) |
| `default/themed/shell.toml.tpl` — `size-horizontal` | Theme bar height token (upstream relies on the dynamic floor rather than a baked height) | `26` | `26` + dynamic floor |

`hyprctl monitors` confirmed `reserved: 0 26 0 0` at package defaults — only the normal 26px bar, no notch floor.
