ProbeLabs65 findings · 95 requirements

A proof layer — requirements, tests and verified fixes — for two of Omarchy's subsystems: the application menu (launcher scripts, QML model, JSONC config, search and selection) and the lock screen (lock scripts, QML, PAM authentication). Scope is deliberately limited to those components of omacom/omarchy; the rest of the distribution is not covered.

Original report

Installer renders left-of-center on ultrawide, possibly when a narrower second monitor is attachedrevision 1 · captured 2026-09-28 21:29 UTC via poll

System details

LG 34GN850 (3440x1440) + Acer XB271HU (2560x1440, physically rotated to portrait)

What's wrong?

Cosmetic only — install completed fine. Filing mostly so it's documented.

What I saw

Installing 4.0.0 on a 3440x1440 ultrawide (DP-1) with a 2560x1440 monitor as a
second head (DP-2). The install progress screen renders centered within the left
~74% of the ultrawide, with the right ~880px never painted. On the 2560x1440
monitor the same frame is perfectly centered.

Why

Not a centering bug in the installer — left_padding() centers correctly within
the console it's handed. It's DRM's fbdev emulation: drm_fb_helper_single_fb_probe
allocates the framebuffer at the max size across connected CRTCs but clamps the
visible console to the min, so the console is guaranteed readable on every
attached display. Both CRTCs then scan out from (0,0).

Reproducible on the installed system:

$ cat /sys/class/graphics/fb0/modes
U:2560x1440p-0 # visible console area = min across heads
$ cat /sys/class/graphics/fb0/virtual_size
3440,1440 # allocated buffer = max across heads
$ cat /sys/class/graphics/fb0/stride
13824                          # = 3456px

DP-1: 3440x1440   DP-2: 2560x1440

So the installer gets a 320-column console (2560/8px) and centers at px 1280 of a
3440px panel. \033[2J only clears the console area, which is why the right strip
is unpainted background rather than black.

Environment

  • Omarchy 4.0.0, kernel 7.1.8-arch1-3
  • LG 34GN850 (3440x1440) + Acer XB271HU (2560x1440, physically rotated to portrait)

## Why

Not a centering bug in the installer — `left_padding()` centers correctly within
the console it's handed. It's DRM's fbdev emulation: `drm_fb_helper_single_fb_probe`
allocates the framebuffer at the **max** size across connected CRTCs but clamps the
*visible* console to the **min**, so the console is guaranteed readable on every
attached display. Both CRTCs then scan out from (0,0).

Reproducible on the installed system:

```
$ cat /sys/class/graphics/fb0/modes
U:2560x1440p-0                 # visible console area = min across heads
$ cat /sys/class/graphics/fb0/virtual_size
3440,1440                      # allocated buffer = max across heads
$ cat /sys/class/graphics/fb0/stride
13824                          # = 3456px
DP-1: 3440x1440   DP-2: 2560x1440
```

So the installer gets a 320-column console (2560/8px) and centers at px 1280 of a
3440px panel. `\033[2J` only clears the console area, which is why the right strip
is unpainted background rather than black.
