ProbeLabs65 findings · 95 requirementsA proof layer — requirements, tests and verified fixes — for two of Omarchy's subsystems: the application menu (launcher scripts, QML model, JSONC config, search and selection) and the lock screen (lock scripts, QML, PAM authentication). Original report
System details: Omarchy quattro @ 7488eade (post-4.0.0), QEMU/KVM VM, Hyprland session. Found by an automated QA pass; reproduced on all four runs on a disposable worker VM.
Every ./test/shell run leaves two orphaned inotifywait processes behind, and they hold every file descriptor the harness had open.
runtime-smoke-test.sh:10-18,107 and screenshot-sanity-test.sh:10-19,95 each launch a Quickshell instance against a fixture $HOME and tear it down with kill "$QS_PID" — SIGTERM to the Quickshell process only. Quickshell's localPluginWatcher child (shell/services/PluginRegistry.qml:636-655) is an inotifywait -m -r on the plugins directory; it survives, is reparented to init, and stays alive forever watching a /tmp directory the test has already deleted.
$ ./test/shell; pgrep -af "inotifywait -m -r"
All 180 test files passed.
1181 /usr/bin/inotifywait -m -r -q ... /home/omarchy/.config/omarchy/plugins
16725 /usr/bin/inotifywait -m -r -q ... /tmp/tmp.qKIgVZ7QCK/home/.config/omarchy/plugins
19869 /usr/bin/inotifywait -m -r -q ... /tmp/tmp.FAGhgnH76m/home/.config/omarchy/plugins
$ # ppid 1 means orphaned
1181 ppid=779 <- the real session's shell, correctly parented
47286 ppid=1 <- leaked by a test
50285 ppid=1 <- leaked by a testThe inherited file descriptors are what makes it more than untidy — they blocked my repeat runs, because a lock fd stayed held by a process that had outlived the suite by twenty minutes:
$ fuser -v /tmp/omarchy-shell-test.lock
omarchy 33617 F.... inotifywait
omarchy 36686 F.... inotifywaitOn a contributor's machine each ./test/all adds two permanent processes and two permanent inotify instances (fs.inotify.max_user_instances is 1024 here). I demonstrated the accumulation, not the exhaustion — that would need roughly 512 runs.
omarchy-restart-shell on the live session does not leak, because the session's shell is torn down as a unit. So the fix belongs either in the two test files (kill the process group rather than the pid) or in the QML (have the watcher own and reap its child).
Correction, after an independent review of this report:
Correction to the files named. The two orphans come from screenshot-sanity-test.sh and plugin-registry-contract-test.sh, not runtime-smoke-test.sh. They retain some non-CLOEXEC inherited descriptors -- including an external lock fd and one inotify instance -- rather than every descriptor the harness held, and no active watch survives removal of the temporary directory. A live omarchy-restart-shell does not leak, via graceful teardown.

**System details:** Omarchy `quattro` @ 7488eade (post-4.0.0), QEMU/KVM VM, Hyprland session. Found by an automated QA pass; reproduced on all four runs on a disposable worker VM.
Every `./test/shell` run leaves two orphaned `inotifywait` processes behind, and they hold every file descriptor the harness had open.
`runtime-smoke-test.sh:10-18,107` and `screenshot-sanity-test.sh:10-19,95` each launch a Quickshell instance against a fixture `$HOME` and tear it down with `kill "$QS_PID"` — SIGTERM to the Quickshell process only. Quickshell's `localPluginWatcher` child (`shell/services/PluginRegistry.qml:636-655`) is an `inotifywait -m -r` on the plugins directory; it survives, is reparented to init, and stays alive forever watching a `/tmp` directory the test has already deleted.
```
$ ./test/shell; pgrep -af "inotifywait -m -r"
All 180 test files passed.
1181 /usr/bin/inotifywait -m -r -q ... /home/omarchy/.config/omarchy/plugins
On a contributor's machine each `./test/all` adds two permanent processes and two permanent inotify instances (`fs.inotify.max_user_instances` is 1024 here). I demonstrated the accumulation, not the exhaustion — that would need roughly 512 runs.
`omarchy-restart-shell` on the live session does **not** leak, because the session's shell is torn down as a unit. So the fix belongs either in the two test files (kill the process group rather than the pid) or in the QML (have the watcher own and reap its child).
