Original report

xdg-desktop-portal-hyprland crashes (SIGSEGV) when starting screen recording on AMD RDNA4 (RX 9070)revision 1 · captured 2026-09-28 21:29 UTC via poll

System details

Omarchy 3.3.3 (kernel 6.17.9-arch1-1), Hyprland 0.53.1, xdg-desktop-portal-hyprland 1.3.11-3, xdg-desktop-portal 1.20.3-2, gpu-screen-recorder 5.11.4, AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT (RDNA4, gfx1201), Mesa 25.3.3-arch1.1, vulkan-radeon 25.3.3-1

What's wrong?

When attempting to start screen recording using Alt+Print (which triggers gpu-screen-recorder -w portal), xdg-desktop-portal-hyprland crashes with a SIGSEGV. The crash occurs consistently when initiating screen capture via the portal interface.

## Steps to Reproduce

  1. Press Alt+Print to start screen recording (or run gpu-screen-recorder -w portal)
  2. The xdg-desktop-portal-hyprland picker dialog appears
  3. Immediately after selecting a screen/window, xdg-desktop-portal-hyprland crashes

## Expected Behavior

Screen recording should start without crashing.

## Crash History

This crash has been occurring repeatedly over the past month:
- 2026-01-03 (multiple times)
- 2026-01-16
- 2026-01-18
- 2026-01-27 (multiple times)
- 2026-02-04

## Workaround

Using gpu-screen-recorder with direct screen capture (-w screen) instead of portal mode works without issues:
gpu-screen-recorder -w screen -f 60 -o output.mp4

Additional Notes

  • The stack trace shows the crash originates in libgallium (Mesa's AMD driver), suggesting this might be related to DMA-BUF handling or screencopy on RDNA4 GPUs.
  • This may be a Mesa bug that manifests through xdg-desktop-portal-hyprland's screencopy implementation.
  • The crash happens during Hyprutils::OS::CProcess::runSync suggesting it might be related to a subprocess call within the portal.
  • Kernel version note: Also tested on kernel 6.18 with the same result - the crash is not kernel-version dependent.
  • Timeline: Based on coredump history, this bug has been present since at least January 3rd, 2026.
