What's wrong?
I'm assuming my issue is in the same category as the issue here and a few other issues posted, however the workarounds discussed I have mostly found unsatisfactory.
For me, it wasn't just Chromium that was flickering and causing system freeze. Firefox worked with no flickering, and even playing Youtube videos worked, however some video players (like Pixeldrain) caused system freeze that required reboot. I know you can disable hardware acceleration but that's not really a solution.
I failed to capture/find the original log, but it looked almost identical to this:
[ 129.372362] radeon 0000:0a:00.0: ring 0 stalled for more than 11228msec
[ 129.820391] radeon 0000:0a:00.0: ring 3 stalled for more than 11676msecI then realized that for kernel loads and uses radeon rather than amdgpu, which is what causes that in the first place. Forcing amdgpu via adding the following lines to /etc/modprobe.d/amdgpu.conf:
options amdgpu si_support=1
options amdgpu cik_support=1
options amdgpu runpm=1and to /etc/modprobe.d/radeon.conf:
`options radeon si_support=0`
`options radeon cik_support=0`
`options radeon runpm=1`produced a black screen on boot.
Adding amdgpu.dc=0 to kernel parameters did nothing.
I looked around a bit and found this, which made me try putting acpi_backlight=native in kernel parameters. This seems to have fixed the issue partway, as on boot I am able to log in, lspci -k | grep -A3 -E "VGA|3D\Display" shows that I am now using amdgpu, and there is no flickering or system freezes.
The caveat is that if I reboot OR wake up from suspend, it's black screen again that requires a forced shutdown and boot. The above makes me think it's still something related to the backlight, because my bluetooth device seems to connect on wake up from suspend even though the laptop looks like it's fully off (even though it isn't), but I just feel like I'm putting bandaids on an issue I don't really understand.
