Original report
Summary
When /etc/vconsole.conf lists more than one layout and the first is non-Latin (e.g. XKBLAYOUT="ru,us"), Omarchy's Hyprland kb_layout becomes us,ru,us instead of us,ru. The duplicate us makes grp:alts_toggle (Left Alt + Right Alt) appear to work only every other press: the cycle us -> ru -> us -> us has no visible change on the last step.
Steps to reproduce
- Configure two layouts with a non-Latin first, e.g.:
XKBLAYOUT=ru,us (as set by localectl set-x11-keymap ru,us)
2. Log into Hyprland.
3. Inspect the keyboard layout:
hyprctl devices | grep rules Output shows: l "us,ru,us", ... o "...,grp:alts_toggle"
4. Press Left Alt + Right Alt repeatedly. The layout changes only every other press (RU -> US -> [no visible change] -> RU).
Expected
us,ru — exactly one US and one RU, so every Left Alt + Right Alt press visibly toggles.
Cause
/usr/share/omarchy/default/hypr/input.lua
local kb_layout = vconsole.XKBLAYOUT or "us" -- line 31: "ru,us"
if non_latin_layouts:find(" " .. kb_layout:match("^[^,]*") .. " ", 1, true) then
kb_layout = "us," .. kb_layout -- line 44: "us," .. "ru,us" == "us,ru,us"
kb_options = kb_options .. ",grp:alts_toggle"
endLine 43 tests only the first layout ("ru"), but line 44 prepends us, to the entire layout list, producing us,ru,us. The duplicate is what breaks the perceived toggle.
Suggested fix
Build the list explicitly instead of string-prepending, so us is placed first and never duplicated:
if non_latin_layouts:find(" " .. kb_layout:match("^[^,]*") .. " ", 1, true) then
-- Move US to the front, keeping the original layout(s) and removing duplicates.
local rest = {}
for layout in kb_layout:gmatch("[^,]+") do
if layout ~= "us" then rest[#rest + 1] = layout end
end
kb_layout = "us" .. (#rest > 0 and ("," .. table.concat(rest, ",")) or "")
kb_options = kb_options .. ",grp:alts_toggle"
endFor ru,us this yields us,ru (not us,ru,us). Maintainers should adapt to match their style; the essential requirement is that a multi-layout vconsole value is handled without duplication.
Workaround
Override in ~/.config/hypr/input.lua:
hl.config({
input = {
kb_layout = "us,ru",
kb_options = "compose:caps,shift:both_capslock_cancel,grp:alts_toggle",
},
})Diagnostics

## Summary
When `/etc/vconsole.conf` lists more than one layout and the first is non-Latin (e.g. `XKBLAYOUT="ru,us"`), Omarchy's Hyprland `kb_layout` becomes `us,ru,us` instead of `us,ru`. The duplicate `us` makes `grp:alts_toggle` (Left Alt + Right Alt) appear to work only **every other press**: the cycle `us -> ru -> us -> us` has no visible change on the last step.
## Steps to reproduce
1. Configure two layouts with a non-Latin first, e.g.:
```
XKBLAYOUT=ru,us
```
(as set by `localectl set-x11-keymap ru,us`)
2. Log into Hyprland.
3. Inspect the keyboard layout:
```
hyprctl devices | grep rules
```
Output shows: `l "us,ru,us", ... o "...,grp:alts_toggle"`
4. Press Left Alt + Right Alt repeatedly. The layout changes only every other press (RU -> US -> [no visible change] -> RU).
## Expected
`us,ru` — exactly one US and one RU, so every Left Alt + Right Alt press visibly toggles.
## Cause
`/usr/share/omarchy/default/hypr/input.lua`
```lua
local kb_layout = vconsole.XKBLAYOUT or "us" -- line 31: "ru,us"
if non_latin_layouts:find(" " .. kb_layout:match("^[^,]*") .. " ", 1, true) then
kb_layout = "us," .. kb_layout -- line 44: "us," .. "ru,us" == "us,ru,us"
kb_options = kb_options .. ",grp:alts_toggle"
end
```
Line 43 tests only the *first* layout (`"ru"`), but line 44 prepends `us,` to the *entire* layout list, producing `us,ru,us`. The duplicate is what breaks the perceived toggle.
## Suggested fix
Build the list explicitly instead of string-prepending, so `us` is placed first and never duplicated:
```lua
if non_latin_layouts:find(" " .. kb_layout:match("^[^,]*") .. " ", 1, true) then
-- Move US to the front, keeping the original layout(s) and removing duplicates.
local rest = {}
for layout in kb_layout:gmatch("[^,]+") do
if layout ~= "us" then rest[#rest + 1] = layout end
end
kb_layout = "us" .. (#rest > 0 and ("," .. table.concat(rest, ",")) or "")
kb_options = kb_options .. ",grp:alts_toggle"
end
```
For `ru,us` this yields `us,ru` (not `us,ru,us`). Maintainers should adapt to match their style; the essential requirement is that a multi-layout vconsole value is handled without duplication.
## Workaround
Override in `~/.config/hypr/input.lua`:
```lua
hl.config({
input = {
kb_layout = "us,ru",
kb_options = "compose:caps,shift:both_capslock_cancel,grp:alts_toggle",
},
})
```
