Original report
Summary
A user who selects Japanese at install gets a JIS keymap, but no path to actual Japanese (kana-kanji) input. fcitx5-mozc and fcitx5-configtool are not installed, and the only pointer is one paragraph in the manual. This proposes docs/guidance-only improvement, scoped to Japanese. No installer package changes, no system-locale changes.
Current state (verified on 4.0.4-1)
- Installer offers
Japanese|jp106(install/provisioning/setup-form.sh:58), XKB/console layout selection only, no IME mention. - Base packages ship only the framework (
install/omarchy-base.packages:35-37:fcitx5,fcitx5-gtk,fcitx5-qt). Nofcitx5-mozc, nofcitx5-configtool. omarchy-fcitx5.serviceis enabled for CapsLock compose (install/user/first-run/enable-user-units.sh:20), not for CJK input.- The only guidance is one paragraph under
Keyboard, Mouse, Trackpad > Typing in Chinese, Japanese, and other languages: install e.g.fcitx5-mozcviaomarchy pkg add, plusfcitx5-configtool. - Net effect: installable with a Japanese keyboard, but Japanese input does not work out of the box and first-time users get stuck.
Repro
- Fresh install, select
Japanesekeyboard. - Log in, try kana-kanji conversion.
- Nothing works until the user discovers
omarchy pkg add fcitx5-mozc fcitx5-configtool, adds Mozc in configtool, sets the switch key, and re-logs in.
Proposal (docs/guidance only)
- Expand the manual section with the concrete post-install steps:
omarchy pkg add fcitx5-mozc fcitx5-configtool→ add Mozc in configtool → set switch key (Ctrl+Space/Zenkaku_Hankakuetc.) → re-login. - Optionally surface the same pointer at first boot / in
Setup > Inputhelp text so Japanese-layout users can find it. - Link known caveats instead of fixing them here (see below).
Non-goals (to avoid re-litigating #1187)
- No system-locale (
LANG) changes. System stays English, per DHH's stance in #1187. - No automatic
mozcinstallation, no new installer options. - No keyboard auto-detection (separate topic, on hold).

Open question
- What
Japanese|jp106actually writes toXKBLAYOUT(cf. theuk→gbprecedent)? Worth one line in the doc fix if it turns out to bejp106verbatim vsjp.
