ProbeLabs65 findings · 95 requirements

A proof layer — requirements, tests and verified fixes — for two of Omarchy's subsystems: the application menu (launcher scripts, QML model, JSONC config, search and selection) and the lock screen (lock scripts, QML, PAM authentication). Scope is deliberately limited to those components of omacom/omarchy; the rest of the distribution is not covered.

Original report

Opening application launcher Walker is slow and prevents immediate typingrevision 1 · captured 2026-10-04 11:35 UTC via poll

Omarchy's Walker is significantly slower to open than a custom hyprland configuration with Rofi as an app launcher.

The user experience is degraded significantly, beyond just the lack of snappiness, in that it is not possible to start searching for a menu entry before the launcher has appeared on screen. Concrete example:

  • Press SUPER + Space to open Walker
  • Immediately start typing "calculator" to search for Calculator app
  • Notice that Walker only registered "culator" in the best case, but if you type fast only "ulator", and filters accordingly

In other words, the latency is such that 3 or more letters can easily be typed before Walker starts registering inputs. That is not the experience one can expect with a fast launcher on hyprland. On a fresh install with a custom configuration of Hyprland and Rofi as a launcher, Rofi feels significantly snappier / low-latency (although I have not formally measured), but more importantly, it captures every single key stroke:

  • Press SUPER + Space to open Rofi
  • Immediately start typing "calculator" as fast as you want
  • Full "calculator" is captured and properly filtered

This allows a highly efficient and satisfying workflow -- which anyone should demand on hyprland! -- where you can launch apps ultra fast without having to think of the (lack of) performance of the launcher. Practically, launching calculator for me would normally be:

  • Press SUPER + Space
  • Without waiting immediately type "calc"
  • Without waiting immediately press Enter

And see the calculator app open without truly having looked at the launcher.

That latency with Walker is suspicious -- I have a hard time understanding why it'd be so slow for such a minimal app, but I have not investigated the code/architecture.
