Omarchy 3.0.2
What's wrong?
When running Omarchy v3.0.2 inside VirtualBox, the default monitor scaling for Hyprland is set to 2x Retina instead of 1x. This causes scaling issues that prevent the OS from being properly usable in a VM environment.
Because the scaling is locked at 2x, and VirtualBox Guest Additions are not yet installed, the VM window cannot scale dynamically. As a result, the entire desktop is cut off on all sides, making it impossible to use terminal applications or system menus effectively. The only application that was marginally usable was NeoVim, which was how I figured out & applied a temporary workaround.
Steps to reproduce
1. Run Omarchy v3.0.2 in VirtualBox.
2. Start into the default Hyprland session.
3. Observe that scaling is locked at 2x Retina, cutting off the usable screen area in all directions.
Expected behavior
Default scaling should be 1x, so that the OS is usable on standard displays (1080p and above) and in VM environments without Guest Additions installed. Users with HiDPI/4k+ monitors can then manually switch scaling to 2x if desired.
Workaround
I created a temporary workaround that resolves the issue until a fix is applied:
👉 Workaround Guide
Proposed Fix
The fix is quick & straightforward:
- Comment out the 2x Retina settings for 4k+ monitors in the default Hyprland config.
- Uncomment the 1x settings for 1080p monitors.
This ensures that by default all screens at 1080p and above work properly, and users can still manually adjust scaling to 2x if needed.
System details
- Omarchy version: 3.0.2
- Environment: VirtualBox (no Guest Additions installed since the issue prevents that)
- Display: physical 1080p, but fixed default size set by VirtualBox which is way smaller (like ~<720p)
