ScreenSaver interrupted after less than a second when using thunderbolt monitor

What's wrong?
Not a big issue, but perhaps useful to report. When I connect an external thunderbolt screen, then it is impossible to start the screensaver. A soon as the screensaver start, after a fraction of a seconds stops, as if interrupted by a keyboard or mouse input. It happens both with a monitor a with an actual keyboard and mouse connected to it, but also with a monitor with no actual input devices connected to it. Perhaps a related behaviour: the system do not enter sleep when I close the laptop lead. but then when I disconnect the monitor it can enter sleep mode after a while
