System details
Asus TUF A15 ryzen 7 74445HS RTX 3050 4GB
What's wrong?
Display brightness cannot be controlled on ASUS TUF laptops running Omarchy (Arch-based, Hyprland, Wayland). The system does not expose any backlight device under "/sys/class/backlight", making brightness adjustment impossible via standard tools.
System Information
- Device: ASUS TUF A15
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7445HS
- GPU:
- AMD iGPU (HawkPoint) – drives display
- NVIDIA RTX 3050 Mobile (dGPU)
- Kernel: 6.19.8-arch1-1
- Display Server: Wayland (Hyprland)
- Distro: Omarchy (Arch-based)
Steps to Reproduce
- Install Omarchy on ASUS TUF laptop with AMD + NVIDIA hybrid graphics
- Boot into Hyprland session
- Run:
ls /sys/class/backlight
Expected Behavior
- A backlight device should be present:
amdgpu_bl0
- Brightness should be adjustable using:
- "brightnessctl"
- keyboard brightness keys
Actual Behavior
- "/sys/class/backlight" is empty
- Brightness keys do not work
- "brightnessctl" has no effect
- No way to control display brightness
Relevant Logs
dmesg | grep -i backlight
Output:
amdgpu: [drm] Skipping amdgpu DM backlight registration
GPU Detection
lspci | grep -E "VGA|3D"
Output:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA RTX 3050 Mobile
06:00.0 VGA compatible controller: AMD HawkPoint
Kernel Command Line (observed)
... amdgpu.backlight=1
Analysis
- The display is driven by the AMD iGPU
- The AMD driver fails to register a backlight device ("amdgpu_bl0")
- The kernel parameter "amdgpu.backlight=0" disables AMD backlight entirely
- NVIDIA backlight module ("nvidia_wmi_ec_backlight") may interfere
- No fallback backlight device is exposed
This results in complete loss of brightness control.
Impact
- Cannot adjust screen brightness
- Poor usability in different lighting conditions
- Increased battery drain
- Critical issue for laptop users
Workaround / Fix
The issue can be resolved manually by forcing AMD backlight and disabling the conflicting NVIDIA backlight module:
Disable NVIDIA backlight (conflicting)
sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-nvidia-backlight.conf
Add:
blacklist nvidia_wmi_ec_backlight
Edit the limine.conf
open /boot/limine.conf
add this to the end of the cmdline line 29:
amdgpu.backlight=0 acpi_backlight=native
reboot
After reboot:
ls /sys/class/backlight
Expected:
amdgpu_bl0
Brightness can then be controlled via:
brightnessctl set 50%
Suggested Fix
- Do ship with "acpi_backlight=native" enabled by default
- Ensure "amdgpu_bl0" is registered properly on AMD iGPU systems
- Detect ASUS hybrid setups and avoid loading conflicting "nvidia_wmi_ec_backlight"
- Provide a working backlight device out-of-the-box
Notes
This appears to be a configuration or driver interaction issue rather than user misconfiguration. The hardware is standard for modern AMD + NVIDIA hybrid laptops, and brightness control should work by default.
