A proof layer — requirements, tests and verified fixes — for two of Omarchy's subsystems: the application menu (launcher scripts, QML model, JSONC config, search and selection) and the lock screen (lock scripts, QML, PAM authentication). Scope is deliberately limited to those components of omacom/omarchy; the rest of the distribution is not covered.

Default terminal picker in Setup menu should support any installed terminal emulatorrevision 1 · captured 2026-10-04 11:56 UTC via poll

Hi team, love what you have built with omarchy.

The xdg-terminals.list file already supports any terminal with a valid desktop entry, and #2673 was resolved by switching to xdg-terminal-exec which was a great fix. But the Default Terminal picker in the Setup menu still only shows four hardcoded options: Alacritty, Foot, Ghostty, and Kitty.

If you install anything else, like Warp or Konsole, there is no way to switch to it through the UI. You have to edit xdg-terminals.list by hand, and the picker still shows the old terminal as selected because omarchy-default-terminal does not recognise the desktop entry.

To work around this I wrote a patch script that re-applies the changes after each omarchy-update overwrites them:

#!/bin/bash

MENU="$HOME/.local/share/omarchy/bin/omarchy-menu"
DEFAULT_TERM="$HOME/.local/share/omarchy/bin/omarchy-default-terminal"

patch_default_terminal() {
  local file="$DEFAULT_TERM"
  if grep -q 'dev.warp.Warp.desktop) echo "warp"' "$file"; then
    echo "omarchy-default-terminal: already patched"; return
  fi
  python3 << PYEOF
with open('$file', 'r') as f:
    lines = f.readlines()
kitty_read_line = next(i for i, l in enumerate(lines) if 'kitty.desktop) echo "kitty"' in l)
kitty_set_line  = next(i for i, l in enumerate(lines) if 'kitty) desktop_id="kitty.desktop"' in l)
lines.insert(kitty_read_line + 1, '  dev.warp.Warp.desktop) echo "warp" ;;\n')
lines.insert(kitty_set_line + 2, 'warp) desktop_id="dev.warp.Warp.desktop"; name="Warp"; glyph="" ;;\n')
with open('$file', 'w') as f:
    f.writelines(lines)
PYEOF
  echo "omarchy-default-terminal: patched"
}

patch_menu() {
  local file="$MENU"
  if grep -q 'warp-terminal' "$file"; then
    echo "omarchy-menu: already patched"; return
  fi
  python3 << PYEOF
with open('$file', 'r') as f:
    lines = f.readlines()
kitty_opt_line     = next(i for i, l in enumerate(lines) if 'omarchy-cmd-present kitty' in l and 'options' in l)
kitty_current_line = next(i for i, l in enumerate(lines) if 'kitty) current=' in l)
kitty_action_line  = next(i for i, l in enumerate(lines) if '*Kitty*) omarchy-default-terminal kitty' in l)
lines.insert(kitty_opt_line + 1,     '  omarchy-cmd-present warp-terminal && options="${options:+$options\n}  Warp"\n')
lines.insert(kitty_current_line + 2, '  warp) current="  Warp" ;;\n')
lines.insert(kitty_action_line + 3,  '  *Warp*) omarchy-default-terminal warp ;;\n')
with open('$file', 'w') as f:
    f.writelines(lines)
PYEOF
  echo "omarchy-menu: patched"
}

Having to maintain a patch script to survive updates is not a great experience. It would be great if the picker auto-detected any installed terminal with Categories=...TerminalEmulator... in its desktop file, or at least read xdg-terminals.list directly so the UI stays in sync with whatever the user has configured. That way the system stays flexible without needing a code change each time a new terminal gains popularity.

Thanks for considering it!
