ProbeLabs65 findings · 95 requirements

A proof layer — requirements, tests and verified fixes — for two of Omarchy's subsystems: the application menu (launcher scripts, QML model, JSONC config, search and selection) and the lock screen (lock scripts, QML, PAM authentication). Scope is deliberately limited to those components of omacom/omarchy; the rest of the distribution is not covered.

Original report

`o.shell_succeeds()` always returns false inside Hyprland, so NVIDIA env detection never firesrevision 1 · captured 2026-10-04 12:03 UTC via poll

System details

AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D, NVIDIA RTX 5070 Ti (GB203, 10de:2c05) + AMD Raphael iGPU, nvidia-open-dkms 610.57.04-1, Omarchy 4.0.0.alpha, Hyprland 0.56.2

What's wrong?

o.shell_succeeds() in default/hypr/helpers.lua can never return true when
evaluated inside Hyprland. It wraps os.execute(), and in the Hyprland process
the child's exit status is unavailable — the call returns
nil, "No child processes", 10 (ECHILD) no matter how the command exits.

The command genuinely runs. Only its status is lost. So every shell_succeeds
guard silently takes the false branch.

default/hypr/nvidia.lua is the only caller on main today, so the visible
consequence is that NVIDIA environment detection never fires — NVD_BACKEND,
LIBVA_DRIVER_NAME and __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME are never set, even where
the detectors plainly succeed from a shell.

Reproduction

$ /usr/share/omarchy/bin/omarchy-hw-nvidia; echo $?
0                                       # detector succeeds from a shell

$ hyprctl repl 'return tostring(o.shell_succeeds(o.shell_quote("/usr/share/omarchy/bin/omarchy-hw-nvidia")))'
false # ...but false inside Hyprland

$ hyprctl repl 'local ok,how,code = os.execute("/usr/share/omarchy/bin/omarchy-hw-nvidia >/dev/null 2>&1"); return tostring(ok).." / "..tostring(how).." / "..tostring(code)'
nil / No child processes / 10           # ECHILD

It is not specific to those scripts — bare true fails the same way:

$ hyprctl repl 'local ok,how,code=os.execute("true"); return tostring(ok).." / "..tostring(how).." / "..tostring(code)'
nil / No child processes / 10

The command really does execute: hyprctl repl 'os.execute("touch /tmp/proof")'
creates the file. Only the waitpid() fails.

Effect on the environment, captured on stock config — every unconditional
hl.env() in default/hypr/envs.lua reaches a Hyprland-spawned child, and only
the three inside the nvidia.lua guard are missing:

$ hyprctl dispatch 'hl.dsp.exec_cmd("/path/to/capture-env.sh")'
$ grep -E 'GDK_BACKEND|OMARCHY_PATH|XCURSOR_SIZE' env.txt
GDK_BACKEND=wayland,x11,*
OMARCHY_PATH=/usr/share/omarchy
XCURSOR_SIZE=24
$ grep -E 'NVD_BACKEND|LIBVA_DRIVER_NAME|__GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME' env.txt
(nothing)

Why the test suite can't catch this

test/shell.d/hyprland-default-config-test.sh loads the config with the
standalone lua interpreter, not inside Hyprland. There, os.execute behaves
normally:

$ lua -e 'local ok,how,code=os.execute("/usr/share/omarchy/bin/omarchy-hw-nvidia >/dev/null 2>&1"); print(ok,how,code)'
true	exit	0

So shell_succeeds returns true under test and false in production.
Any test written against the current harness will pass while the real thing is
broken, which is probably why this has gone unnoticed.

Cause

Something in the Hyprland process reaps children before libc can wait on them,
so system() finds nothing to collect and reports ECHILD.

SIGCHLD is not ignored, caught, or blocked on Hyprland's main thread, so this
isn't the usual SIG_IGN case. There is a GLib gmain thread in the process
with SIGCHLD blocked (SigBlk: fffffffe7ffbfeff), which is consistent with
GLib's child-watch machinery reaping process-wide.

Whichever component owns it, the consequence isn't specific to os.execute —
`io.popen()` loses the status in exactly the same way, so swapping to it is
not a fix:

$ hyprctl repl 'local p=io.popen("true"); p:read("*a"); local ok,how,code=p:close(); return tostring(ok).." / "..tostring(how).." / "..tostring(code)'
nil / No child processes / 10

Not a regression from #6712

nvidia.lua has used shell_succeeds since the file was created in
b45e8464 (2026-05-25, "Move NVIDIA env setup to Hyprland Lua"). #6712
(2026-08-11) only changed which command the guard runs — `lspci | grep -qi
nvidia` became the sysfs detector — and kept the guard as-is. The reload-timeout
fix #6712 shipped is real and unaffected by this; the env vars were never being
set before or after it.

Worth fixing in the helper rather than at the call site, though, because the
same behaviour has been worked around once already: 1b6ab153 (2026-07-23,
"Fix command detection in Hyprland Lua") rewrote o.cmd_present() to stop
calling shell_succeeds and walk PATH with io.open instead — exactly the
shape of change this bug forces. The helper was left armed for the next caller,
and the thread on #6712 discusses converting further lspci call sites to the
same detector pattern.

Suggested fix

Read a marker from stdout instead of relying on exit status. Verified inside
Hyprland on this machine:

function o.shell_succeeds(command)
  local pipe = io.popen(command .. " >/dev/null 2>&1 && echo OK")
  if not pipe then return false end
  local output = pipe:read("*a") or ""
  pipe:close() -- status is unreliable here; the marker is the signal
  return output:find("OK", 1, true) ~= nil
end
true -> true    false -> false    /nonexistent/binary -> false
nvidia=true  gsp=true  without_gsp=false      # correct for this hardware

Separately, nvidia.lua arguably shouldn't shell out at all — the detectors
just read three sysfs files, which Lua can do directly with io.open, serving
#6712's don't-wake-the-GPU goal even better than the current shell-out. A
pure-Lua port returns has_nvidia=true gsp=true here. (Enumerating
/sys/bus/pci/devices still needs one popen whose stdout is read — vanilla
Lua has no directory primitive and lfs isn't available in Hyprland's
interpreter.)

Fixing the helper is the part that matters; it repairs every future caller too.

Notes

  • helpers.lua on main is byte-identical to the installed copy, and

nvidia.lua on main still has all three guards (lines 10, 11, 15).
- libva-nvidia-driver (0.0.17-1) is installed here and NVD_BACKEND /
LIBVA_DRIVER_NAME are the variables it keys off, so the selection Omarchy
intends isn't happening. I haven't measured a specific decode regression
though — I'm reporting the config bug, which is unambiguous, rather than
claiming a user-visible one I haven't isolated.
- This machine now carries a local hl.env() workaround in
~/.config/hypr/hyprland.lua, so the environment capture above reflects stock
config from before that was added.

### System details

AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D, NVIDIA RTX 5070 Ti (GB203, `10de:2c05`) + AMD Raphael iGPU, nvidia-open-dkms 610.57.04-1, Omarchy 4.0.0.alpha, Hyprland 0.56.2

### What's wrong?

`o.shell_succeeds()` in `default/hypr/helpers.lua` can never return true when
evaluated inside Hyprland. It wraps `os.execute()`, and in the Hyprland process
the child's exit status is unavailable — the call returns
`nil, "No child processes", 10` (ECHILD) no matter how the command exits.

The command genuinely runs. Only its status is lost. So every `shell_succeeds`
guard silently takes the false branch.

`default/hypr/nvidia.lua` is the only caller on `main` today, so the visible
consequence is that **NVIDIA environment detection never fires** — `NVD_BACKEND`,
`LIBVA_DRIVER_NAME` and `__GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME` are never set, even where
the detectors plainly succeed from a shell.

## Reproduction

```
$ /usr/share/omarchy/bin/omarchy-hw-nvidia; echo $?
0                                       # detector succeeds from a shell
$ hyprctl repl 'return tostring(o.shell_succeeds(o.shell_quote("/usr/share/omarchy/bin/omarchy-hw-nvidia")))'
false                                   # ...but false inside Hyprland
$ hyprctl repl 'local ok,how,code = os.execute("/usr/share/omarchy/bin/omarchy-hw-nvidia >/dev/null 2>&1"); return tostring(ok).." / "..tostring(how).." / "..tostring(code)'
nil / No child processes / 10           # ECHILD
```

It is not specific to those scripts — bare `true` fails the same way:

```
$ hyprctl repl 'local ok,how,code=os.execute("true"); return tostring(ok).." / "..tostring(how).." / "..tostring(code)'
nil / No child processes / 10
```

The command really does execute: `hyprctl repl 'os.execute("touch /tmp/proof")'`
creates the file. Only the `waitpid()` fails.

Effect on the environment, captured on stock config — every unconditional
`hl.env()` in `default/hypr/envs.lua` reaches a Hyprland-spawned child, and only
the three inside the `nvidia.lua` guard are missing:

```
$ hyprctl dispatch 'hl.dsp.exec_cmd("/path/to/capture-env.sh")'
$ grep -E 'GDK_BACKEND|OMARCHY_PATH|XCURSOR_SIZE' env.txt
GDK_BACKEND=wayland,x11,*
OMARCHY_PATH=/usr/share/omarchy
XCURSOR_SIZE=24
$ grep -E 'NVD_BACKEND|LIBVA_DRIVER_NAME|__GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME' env.txt
(nothing)
```

## Why the test suite can't catch this

`test/shell.d/hyprland-default-config-test.sh` loads the config with the
standalone `lua` interpreter, not inside Hyprland. There, `os.execute` behaves
normally:

```
$ lua -e 'local ok,how,code=os.execute("/usr/share/omarchy/bin/omarchy-hw-nvidia >/dev/null 2>&1"); print(ok,how,code)'
true	exit	0
```

So `shell_succeeds` returns **true** under test and **false** in production.
Any test written against the current harness will pass while the real thing is
broken, which is probably why this has gone unnoticed.

## Cause

Something in the Hyprland process reaps children before libc can wait on them,
so `system()` finds nothing to collect and reports ECHILD.

`SIGCHLD` is not ignored, caught, or blocked on Hyprland's main thread, so this
isn't the usual `SIG_IGN` case. There is a GLib `gmain` thread in the process
with `SIGCHLD` blocked (`SigBlk: fffffffe7ffbfeff`), which is consistent with
GLib's child-watch machinery reaping process-wide.

Whichever component owns it, the consequence isn't specific to `os.execute` —
**`io.popen()` loses the status in exactly the same way**, so swapping to it is
not a fix:

```
$ hyprctl repl 'local p=io.popen("true"); p:read("*a"); local ok,how,code=p:close(); return tostring(ok).." / "..tostring(how).." / "..tostring(code)'
nil / No child processes / 10
```

## Not a regression from #6712

`nvidia.lua` has used `shell_succeeds` since the file was created in
**b45e8464** (2026-05-25, "Move NVIDIA env setup to Hyprland Lua"). **#6712**
(2026-08-11) only changed *which command* the guard runs — `lspci | grep -qi
nvidia` became the sysfs detector — and kept the guard as-is. The reload-timeout
fix #6712 shipped is real and unaffected by this; the env vars were never being
set before or after it.

Worth fixing in the helper rather than at the call site, though, because the
same behaviour has been worked around once already: **1b6ab153** (2026-07-23,
"Fix command detection in Hyprland Lua") rewrote `o.cmd_present()` to stop
calling `shell_succeeds` and walk `PATH` with `io.open` instead — exactly the
shape of change this bug forces. The helper was left armed for the next caller,
and the thread on #6712 discusses converting further `lspci` call sites to the
same detector pattern.

## Suggested fix

Read a marker from stdout instead of relying on exit status. Verified inside
Hyprland on this machine:

```lua
function o.shell_succeeds(command)
  local pipe = io.popen(command .. " >/dev/null 2>&1 && echo OK")
  if not pipe then return false end
  local output = pipe:read("*a") or ""
  pipe:close() -- status is unreliable here; the marker is the signal
  return output:find("OK", 1, true) ~= nil
end
```

```
true -> true    false -> false    /nonexistent/binary -> false
nvidia=true  gsp=true  without_gsp=false      # correct for this hardware
```

Separately, `nvidia.lua` arguably shouldn't shell out at all — the detectors
just read three sysfs files, which Lua can do directly with `io.open`, serving
#6712's don't-wake-the-GPU goal even better than the current shell-out. A
pure-Lua port returns `has_nvidia=true gsp=true` here. (Enumerating
`/sys/bus/pci/devices` still needs one `popen` whose *stdout* is read — vanilla
Lua has no directory primitive and `lfs` isn't available in Hyprland's
interpreter.)

Fixing the helper is the part that matters; it repairs every future caller too.

## Notes

- `helpers.lua` on `main` is byte-identical to the installed copy, and
  `nvidia.lua` on `main` still has all three guards (lines 10, 11, 15).
- `libva-nvidia-driver` (0.0.17-1) is installed here and `NVD_BACKEND` /
  `LIBVA_DRIVER_NAME` are the variables it keys off, so the selection Omarchy
  intends isn't happening. I haven't measured a specific decode regression
  though — I'm reporting the config bug, which is unambiguous, rather than
  claiming a user-visible one I haven't isolated.
- This machine now carries a local `hl.env()` workaround in
  `~/.config/hypr/hyprland.lua`, so the environment capture above reflects stock
  config from before that was added.
