ProbeLabs65 findings · 95 requirementsA proof layer — requirements, tests and verified fixes — for two of Omarchy's subsystems: the application menu (launcher scripts, QML model, JSONC config, search and selection) and the lock screen (lock scripts, QML, PAM authentication). Media bar widget goes blank when a long-titled track is followed by a short-titled one (marquee never resets x)

Original report
What happened
The media bar widget's scrolling title sometimes goes blank (or freezes mid-scroll) when the track changes, and stays broken until another track change happens to restart it. It looked random, but it is fully deterministic: it triggers when a track with a title longer than the bar clip (marquee scrolling) is followed by a track whose title fits without scrolling.
Expected
The short title should display statically, left-aligned, like any other non-scrolling title.
Steps to reproduce
- Play a track with a long title on Spotify (or any MPRIS player), e.g.
What Have They Done To Us (feat. Sasha Alex Sloan) - from the series Arcane League of Legends— the marquee starts scrolling - While it is mid-scroll, skip to a short-titled track, e.g.
Shinkiroby frederic - The media label area goes blank (label parked outside the clip); the play/pause glyph stays. Changing to another long-titled track "fixes" it, which is why it appears intermittent
Verified with the packaged omarchy.media service widget (/usr/share/omarchy/shell/plugins/services/media/BarWidget.qml).
Root cause
In BarWidget.qml:
Text {
id: labelText
property bool needsScroll: implicitWidth > scrollClip.width
NumberAnimation on x {
running: labelText.needsScroll && !root.popupOpen && !root.bar.vertical
loops: Animation.Infinite
from: scrollClip.width
to: -labelText.implicitWidth
}
}x is written only by the animation and has no binding behind it. When needsScroll flips to false mid-flight (long → short title), the animation stops and x keeps its last negative animated value. Nothing ever parks it back, so the label renders entirely outside the clipped 180px viewport (blank), or clipped mid-scroll.
Fix
Minimal fix for the blank-label case, verified locally on the packaged widget:
property bool needsScroll: implicitWidth > scrollClip.width
// The scroll animation writes x with no binding behind it, so when it stops
// mid-flight (title got shorter than the clip), x stays parked at a negative
// offset and the label renders blank. Park it back at the origin whenever
// scrolling is not needed.
onNeedsScrollChanged: if (!needsScroll) x = 0This only parks x. The animation also samples from/to/duration once when it starts, so long → longer transitions still replay stale geometry; the full resync is handled by #8586, which covers this issue's reproduction as well.

### What happened
The media bar widget's scrolling title sometimes goes blank (or freezes mid-scroll) when the track changes, and stays broken until another track change happens to restart it. It looked random, but it is fully deterministic: it triggers when a track with a title **longer than the bar clip** (marquee scrolling) is followed by a track whose title **fits without scrolling**.
### Expected
The short title should display statically, left-aligned, like any other non-scrolling title.
### Steps to reproduce
1. Play a track with a long title on Spotify (or any MPRIS player), e.g. `What Have They Done To Us (feat. Sasha Alex Sloan) - from the series Arcane League of Legends` — the marquee starts scrolling
2. While it is mid-scroll, skip to a short-titled track, e.g. `Shinkiro` by frederic
3. The media label area goes blank (label parked outside the clip); the play/pause glyph stays. Changing to another long-titled track "fixes" it, which is why it appears intermittent
Verified with the packaged `omarchy.media` service widget (`/usr/share/omarchy/shell/plugins/services/media/BarWidget.qml`).
### Root cause
In `BarWidget.qml`:
```qml
Text {
id: labelText
property bool needsScroll: implicitWidth > scrollClip.width
NumberAnimation on x {
running: labelText.needsScroll && !root.popupOpen && !root.bar.vertical
loops: Animation.Infinite
from: scrollClip.width
to: -labelText.implicitWidth
}
}
```
`x` is written only by the animation and has no binding behind it. When `needsScroll` flips to `false` mid-flight (long → short title), the animation stops and `x` keeps its last negative animated value. Nothing ever parks it back, so the label renders entirely outside the clipped 180px viewport (blank), or clipped mid-scroll.
### Fix
Minimal fix for the blank-label case, verified locally on the packaged widget:
```qml
property bool needsScroll: implicitWidth > scrollClip.width
// The scroll animation writes x with no binding behind it, so when it stops
// mid-flight (title got shorter than the clip), x stays parked at a negative
// offset and the label renders blank. Park it back at the origin whenever
// scrolling is not needed.
onNeedsScrollChanged: if (!needsScroll) x = 0
```
This only parks `x`. The animation also samples `from`/`to`/`duration` once when it starts, so long → longer transitions still replay stale geometry; the full resync is handled by #8586, which covers this issue's reproduction as well.
