Omarchy

ProbeLabs65 findings · 95 requirements

A proof layer — requirements, tests and verified fixes — for two of Omarchy's subsystems: the application menu (launcher scripts, QML model, JSONC config, search and selection) and the lock screen (lock scripts, QML, PAM authentication). Scope is deliberately limited to those components of omacom/omarchy; the rest of the distribution is not covered.

Original report

Apps menu empty ("Nothing here yet") after upgrading to 4.0.3revision 1 · captured 2026-10-04 12:10 UTC via poll

What happened

After omarchy update (4.0.2 → 4.0.3) the Omarchy menu's Apps submenu is empty — it shows "Nothing here yet" instead of the installed applications. It was working on 4.0.2.

Expected

The Apps submenu lists the installed applications (as it did on 4.0.2).

Steps to reproduce

  1. Upgrade to Omarchy 4.0.3 (omarchy update).
  2. Open the menu (SUPER + SPACE) → Apps.
  3. Observe "Nothing here yet" (empty list).

System

  • Omarchy 4.0.3-1
  • quickshell-git 0.3.0.r20.g28771c7-3
  • CPU: Intel Core Ultra 7 155U (14 threads)
  • GPU: Intel Meteor Lake-P integrated graphics
  • Arch Linux / Hyprland

What I ruled out

  • Not Quickshell. Downgraded quickshell-git from pkgrel −3 to −2 (same git commit 28771c7) → apps still empty.
  • Not user plugins / menu extension. Moved ~/.config/omarchy/plugins and the user extensions/omarchy-menu.jsonc aside → still empty.
  • Not missing desktop entries. A standalone Quickshell probe (same binary) reports DesktopEntries.applications.values → 68 entries (50 after the hidden-entry filters). The .desktop files are present.
  • The menu app code is unchanged. AppLibrary.qml, AppSearch.js, MenuModel.js and plugins/menu/Menu.qml are byte-identical between 4.0.2 and 4.0.3. Only shell.qml changed (the large plugin-API refactor: pluginShellApis, pluginAppLibraryApis, createScopedPluginShell, pluginAppLibraryFor, …).

Recovery / verification

Downgrading to 4.0.2 restores the Apps list (confirmed).
On 4.0.2 the menu shows the apps; on 4.0.3 it stays empty across shell restarts.

Likely cause

In the 4.0.3 shell.qml refactor the first-party menu plugin (omarchy.menu) is now given its shell / app-library through the scoped plugin API:

  • Loader onLoaded: item.shell = shell.pluginShellFor(manifest) and item.manifest = shell.publicPluginManifest(manifest)
  • pluginShellFor / createScopedPluginShell → appLibrary: shell.manifestHasKind(manifest, "menu") ? shell.pluginAppLibraryFor(cacheKey, key) : null
  • Menu: appLibrary.sortedEntries("") → DesktopEntries.applications.values

In the 4.0.3 shell this chain ends up returning an empty list even though DesktopEntries.applications is fully populated. My suspicion is the app-library wiring through the new scoped plugin shell (PluginAppLibraryApi._sortedEntries / createScopedPluginShell), i.e. the menu plugin loses access to the live app library (either shell.appLibrary is null/not wired, or sortedEntries resolves to an empty list) as a result of the refactor.

I can provide the 4.0.3 ("Nothing here yet") and 4.0.2 (working) screenshots on request.

### What happened

After `omarchy update` (4.0.2 → 4.0.3) the Omarchy menu's **Apps** submenu is **empty** — it shows *"Nothing here yet"* instead of the installed applications. It was working on 4.0.2.

### Expected

The Apps submenu lists the installed applications (as it did on 4.0.2).

### Steps to reproduce

1. Upgrade to Omarchy 4.0.3 (`omarchy update`).
2. Open the menu (SUPER + SPACE) → **Apps**.
3. Observe *"Nothing here yet"* (empty list).

### System

- Omarchy **4.0.3-1**
- quickshell-git **0.3.0.r20.g28771c7-3**
- CPU: Intel Core Ultra 7 155U (14 threads)
- GPU: Intel Meteor Lake-P integrated graphics

### What I ruled out

- **Not Quickshell.** Downgraded `quickshell-git` from pkgrel −3 to −2 (same git commit `28771c7`) → apps still empty.
- **Not user plugins / menu extension.** Moved `~/.config/omarchy/plugins` and the user `extensions/omarchy-menu.jsonc` aside → still empty.
- **Not missing desktop entries.** A standalone Quickshell probe (same binary) reports `DesktopEntries.applications.values` → **68 entries** (50 after the hidden-entry filters). The `.desktop` files are present.
- **The menu app code is unchanged.** `AppLibrary.qml`, `AppSearch.js`, `MenuModel.js` and `plugins/menu/Menu.qml` are **byte-identical** between 4.0.2 and 4.0.3. ### Recovery / verification

Downgrading to **4.0.2** restores the Apps list (confirmed).
On 4.0.2 the menu shows the apps; on 4.0.3 it stays empty across shell restarts.

### Likely cause

In the 4.0.3 `shell.qml` refactor the first-party menu plugin (`omarchy.menu`) is now given its shell / app-library through the scoped plugin API:

- Loader `onLoaded`: `item.shell = shell.pluginShellFor(manifest)` and `item.manifest = shell.publicPluginManifest(manifest)`
- `pluginShellFor` / `createScopedPluginShell` → `appLibrary: shell.manifestHasKind(manifest, "menu") ? shell.pluginAppLibraryFor(cacheKey, key) : null`

In the 4.0.3 shell this chain ends up returning an empty list even though `DesktopEntries.applications` is fully populated. My suspicion is the app-library wiring through the new scoped plugin shell (`PluginAppLibraryApi._sortedEntries` / `createScopedPluginShell`), i.e. the menu plugin loses access to the live app library (either `shell.appLibrary` is null/not wired, or `sortedEntries` resolves to an empty list) as a result of the refactor.

I can provide the 4.0.3 ("Nothing here yet") and 4.0.2 (working) screenshots on request.
