ProbeLabs65 findings · 95 requirements

A proof layer — requirements, tests and verified fixes — for two of Omarchy's subsystems: the application menu (launcher scripts, QML model, JSONC config, search and selection) and the lock screen (lock scripts, QML, PAM authentication). Scope is deliberately limited to those components of omacom/omarchy; the rest of the distribution is not covered.

Add automatic T2 speaker DSP setup for MacBookPro15,1 installationsrevision 1 · captured 2026-09-28 21:23 UTC via poll

Summary

Fresh Omarchy installations on Intel MacBook Pro models with the Apple T2 audio device can expose the internal speakers without the model-specific speaker DSP correction. On a MacBookPro15,1, the result is initially distorted/noisy audio and, after the basic channel-routing issue is resolved, very muffled audio with little bass or treble compared with macOS.

This would be useful to detect and configure automatically during installation or first boot for supported T2 Mac models.

Hardware and software

  • Hardware: MacBook Pro 15-inch, 2018
  • DMI model: MacBookPro15,1
  • T2 kernel: linux-t2 7.2.7-arch1-1
  • Omarchy: 4.0.4-1
  • PipeWire: 1.6.8
  • WirePlumber: 0.5.17
  • Audio device: Apple T2 Audio
  • ALSA UCM package: t2bce_audio-alsa-ucm-conf

Observed behavior

  1. Internal speakers initially sounded like untuned radio/static.
  2. speaker-test through PipeWire could reproduce a clean tone, while browser audio was distorted.
  3. After the routing was corrected, the internal speakers sounded very muffled and lacked the bass/treble present under macOS.
  4. Headphones sounded normal.

The initial UCM device exposed a four-channel speaker sink (4ch 48000Hz) and no model-specific DSP sink.

Working manual solution

The upstream t2-apple-audio-dsp configuration supports MacBookPro15,1. Installing its model-specific WirePlumber graph and FIR files, together with these LV2 dependencies, produced the expected DSP sink:

  • lsp-plugins-lv2
  • bankstown
  • swh-plugins.lv2

The resulting PipeWire nodes are:

  • MacBook Pro 15,1 DSP Speakers
  • MacBook Pro 15,1 DSP Speakers Out

The DSP graph adds model-specific tweeter/woofer FIR correction, virtual bass, compression, limiting, and maps stereo input to the four physical speaker channels.

The package t2bce_audio-dsp was not usable directly on this installation because its Arch package declares a conflict with linux-t2, so integrating the current WirePlumber-based configuration without removing the T2 kernel would be preferable.

Suggested improvement

During installation or first boot:

  • Detect supported T2 DMI models such as MacBookPro15,1.
  • Ensure the matching T2 UCM profile and model-specific DSP dependencies/configuration are installed.
  • Select the DSP speaker sink as the default output.
  • Avoid removing or conflicting with linux-t2.
  • If the optional microphone triforce plugin is unavailable, skip only that microphone DSP rule instead of emitting repeated WirePlumber warnings; speaker DSP should remain enabled.

## Summary

Fresh Omarchy installations on Intel MacBook Pro models with the Apple T2 audio device can expose the internal speakers without the model-specific speaker DSP correction. On a MacBookPro15,1, the result is initially distorted/noisy audio and, after the basic channel-routing issue is resolved, very muffled audio with little bass or treble compared with macOS.

This would be useful to detect and configure automatically during installation or first boot for supported T2 Mac models.

## Hardware and software

- Hardware: MacBook Pro 15-inch, 2018
- DMI model: `MacBookPro15,1`
- T2 kernel: `linux-t2` `7.2.7-arch1-1`
- Omarchy: `4.0.4-1`
- PipeWire: `1.6.8`
- WirePlumber: `0.5.17`
- Audio device: `Apple T2 Audio`
- ALSA UCM package: `t2bce_audio-alsa-ucm-conf`

## Observed behavior

1. Internal speakers initially sounded like untuned radio/static.
2. `speaker-test` through PipeWire could reproduce a clean tone, while browser audio was distorted.
3. After the routing was corrected, the internal speakers sounded very muffled and lacked the bass/treble present under macOS.
4. Headphones sounded normal.

The initial UCM device exposed a four-channel speaker sink (`4ch 48000Hz`) and no model-specific DSP sink.

## Working manual solution

The upstream `t2-apple-audio-dsp` configuration supports `MacBookPro15,1`. Installing its model-specific WirePlumber graph and FIR files, together with these LV2 dependencies, produced the expected DSP sink:

- `lsp-plugins-lv2`
- `bankstown`
- `swh-plugins.lv2`

The resulting PipeWire nodes are:

- `MacBook Pro 15,1 DSP Speakers`
- `MacBook Pro 15,1 DSP Speakers Out`

The DSP graph adds model-specific tweeter/woofer FIR correction, virtual bass, compression, limiting, and maps stereo input to the four physical speaker channels.

The package `t2bce_audio-dsp` was not usable directly on this installation because its Arch package declares a conflict with `linux-t2`, so integrating the current WirePlumber-based configuration without removing the T2 kernel would be preferable.

## Suggested improvement

During installation or first boot:

- Detect supported T2 DMI models such as `MacBookPro15,1`.
- Ensure the matching T2 UCM profile and model-specific DSP dependencies/configuration are installed.
- Select the DSP speaker sink as the default output.
- Avoid removing or conflicting with `linux-t2`.
- If the optional microphone `triforce` plugin is unavailable, skip only that microphone DSP rule instead of emitting repeated WirePlumber warnings; speaker DSP should remain enabled.
