Omarchy

ProbeLabs65 findings · 95 requirements

A proof layer — requirements, tests and verified fixes — for two of Omarchy's subsystems: the application menu (launcher scripts, QML model, JSONC config, search and selection) and the lock screen (lock scripts, QML, PAM authentication). Scope is deliberately limited to those components of omacom/omarchy; the rest of the distribution is not covered.

Bug: Apps menu (Super+Space → Apps) shows "Nothing here yet" after switching from quickshell-git to extra/quickshell

What happened

After an omarchy update, the Apps submenu of the Omarchy menu (Super+Space) is completely empty — it shows the "Nothing here yet" placeholder instead of any installed applications.

What was expected

The Apps submenu should list all installed desktop applications, as it did before.

System

  • Omarchy: 4.0.3-1
  • quickshell: 0.3.1-1 (extra/quickshell)
  • Hyprland: 0.56.2
  • Distro: Omarchy (Arch Linux)

Root cause (as far as I could isolate it)

This is not a problem with the .desktop files or with Omarchy's QML config — I confirmed:

  1. ~/.local/share/applications and /usr/share/applications together contain 88 valid, readable .desktop files. omarchy refresh applications reports nothing missing.
  2. GLib/GIO (Gio.AppInfo.get_all(), the standard freedesktop desktop-entry API used by most of the ecosystem) correctly enumerates 83 applications on this system.
  3. Quickshell's own DesktopEntries.applications singleton, however, returns 0 entries. I reproduced this in complete isolation from the Omarchy shell config, with a minimal shell.qml launched exactly the way Omarchy launches its shell (quickshell -n -p <dir>):
   import QtQuick
   import Quickshell

   Item {
     Timer {
       interval: 4000
       running: true
       onTriggered: {
         var apps = DesktopEntries.applications.values
         console.log("APP_COUNT:", apps.length)
         Qt.quit()
       }
     }
   }

Output: APP_COUNT: 0, both immediately and after a 4s delay (to rule out an async scan not finishing in time).

  1. pacman -Qkk quickshell reports 0 altered files, and ldd shows all shared libraries (including libgio-2.0.so.0) resolve correctly — so this doesn't look like local file corruption.
  2. Checking pacman.log, this system switched from quickshell-git 0.3.0.r20.g28771c7-2 to extra/quickshell 0.3.1-1 during an Omarchy update on 2026-08-28. The Quickshell process kept running in memory (with apps working) until it was restarted by a later update's Hyprland-reload hook, at which point the new 0.3.1 binary came up with an empty DesktopEntries.applications. omarchy/quickshell-git (still in Omarchy's own repo) is presumably unaffected, since this behavior lines up with the package switch.

Steps to reproduce

  1. On a system currently running extra/quickshell 0.3.1-1, restart the shell: omarchy restart shell.
  2. Press Super+Space → Apps.
  3. Observe: "Nothing here yet" instead of the installed application list.

Attempted fixes that did NOT resolve it

  • omarchy refresh applications
  • omarchy restart shell
  • Both were run before filing this report.

Attachments

  • Screenshot of the empty Apps submenu (see attached).
  • Full omarchy-debug --no-sudo --print output available on request.

## Bug: Apps menu (Super+Space → Apps) shows "Nothing here yet" after switching from quickshell-git to extra/quickshell

### What happened
After an `omarchy update`, the Apps submenu of the Omarchy menu (Super+Space) is completely empty — it shows the "Nothing here yet" placeholder instead of any installed applications.

### What was expected
The Apps submenu should list all installed desktop applications, as it did before.

### System
- Omarchy: 4.0.3-1
- quickshell: 0.3.1-1 (extra/quickshell)
- Hyprland: 0.56.2
- Distro: Omarchy (Arch Linux)

### Root cause (as far as I could isolate it)

This is **not** a problem with the `.desktop` files or with Omarchy's QML config — I confirmed:

1. `~/.local/share/applications` and `/usr/share/applications` together contain 88 valid, readable `.desktop` files. `omarchy refresh applications` reports nothing missing.
2. GLib/GIO (`Gio.AppInfo.get_all()`, the standard freedesktop desktop-entry API used by most of the ecosystem) correctly enumerates 83 applications on this system.
3. Quickshell's own `DesktopEntries.applications` singleton, however, returns **0** entries. I reproduced this in complete isolation from the Omarchy shell config, with a minimal `shell.qml` launched exactly the way Omarchy launches its shell (`quickshell -n -p <dir>`):

   ```qml
   import QtQuick
   import Quickshell
   Item {
     Timer {
       interval: 4000
       running: true
       onTriggered: {
         var apps = DesktopEntries.applications.values
         console.log("APP_COUNT:", apps.length)
         Qt.quit()
       }
     }
   }
   ```

   Output: `APP_COUNT: 0`, both immediately and after a 4s delay (to rule out an async scan not finishing in time).

4. `pacman -Qkk quickshell` reports 0 altered files, and `ldd` shows all shared libraries (including `libgio-2.0.so.0`) resolve correctly — so this doesn't look like local file corruption.
5. Checking `pacman.log`, this system switched from `quickshell-git 0.3.0.r20.g28771c7-2` to `extra/quickshell 0.3.1-1` during an Omarchy update on 2026-08-28. The Quickshell process kept running in memory (with apps working) until it was restarted by a later update's Hyprland-reload hook, at which point the new 0.3.1 binary came up with an empty `DesktopEntries.applications`. `omarchy/quickshell-git` (still in Omarchy's own repo) is presumably unaffected, since this behavior lines up with the package switch.

1. On a system currently running `extra/quickshell 0.3.1-1`, restart the shell: `omarchy restart shell`.
2. Press Super+Space → Apps.
3. Observe: "Nothing here yet" instead of the installed application list.
