ProbeLabs65 findings · 95 requirementsA proof layer — requirements, tests and verified fixes — for two of Omarchy's subsystems: the application menu (launcher scripts, QML model, JSONC config, search and selection) and the lock screen (lock scripts, QML, PAM authentication). MacBook9,1 / 10,1 internal speakers silent after install (driver alone isn't enough; EFI chime must be un-muted)

System details
MacBook9,1 (12" Early 2016, CS4208 codec SSID 106b:6500, firmware 447.80.3.0.0), Omarchy 4.0.3, kernel 7.2.3-arch1-3
What's wrong?
Follow-up to #2101, which was closed without a fix.
After install the internal speakers are silent. Headphones work. The mainline snd_hda_codec_cs420x driver finds the codec but picks no fixup, so the speaker amp is never powered:
snd_hda_codec_cs420x hdaudioC0D0: CS4208: picked fixup for codec SSID 106b:0000#2101 pointed at leifliddy/macbook12-audio-driver, but the driver alone isn't enough. It took three things to get working speakers:
- The out-of-tree driver, installed with DKMS (
sudo ./install.cirrus.driver.sh -i). It supports the 6.17+sound/hda/codecslayout and built fine on 7.2.3. - Software volume, because the speaker has no hardware volume control. The repo ships this config:
/etc/wireplumber/wireplumber.conf.d/51-macbook-cs4208-softvol.confwithapi.alsa.soft-mixer = true. - Un-muting the startup chime in NVRAM. The firmware only powers the speaker amp when the chime isn't muted.
SystemAudioVolume-7c436110-ab2a-4bbb-a880-fe41995c9f82wasff(muted); setting it to54fixed it. This is probably why people install the driver, hear nothing and give up. This gist documents it.
After a reboot the chime plays and the speakers work.
Some things that may make this awkward to automate in install/hardware/apple/:
- There's no package. The installer downloads the matching kernel.org source tarball (SHA-256 checked) and compiles the codec module.
- It doesn't work on every unit. Another MacBook9,1 with the same SSID reports silent speakers even with the driver (leifliddy/macbook12-audio-driver#71), though that report doesn't mention the chime fix. MacBook8,1 needs a different driver (omnidecker/macbook8.1-speaker-driver).
- Step 3 writes an EFI variable.
Happy to put together a PR for a MacBook9,1/10,1 hardware fix if that's wanted.

The mainline `snd_hda_codec_cs420x` driver finds the codec but picks no fixup, so the speaker amp is never powered: ``` snd_hda_codec_cs420x hdaudioC0D0: CS4208: picked fixup for codec SSID 106b:0000 ``` #2101 pointed at [leifliddy/macbook12-audio-driver](https://github.com/leifliddy/macbook12-audio-driver), but the driver alone isn't enough.
