Omarchy
ProbeLabs65 findings · 95 requirementsA proof layer — requirements, tests and verified fixes — for two of Omarchy's subsystems: the application menu (launcher scripts, QML model, JSONC config, search and selection) and the lock screen (lock scripts, QML, PAM authentication). Scope is deliberately limited to those components of omacom/omarchy; the rest of the distribution is not covered.

Original report
Title
omarchy update fails under pkexec/agent-driven runs: OMARCHY_PATH unbound, then -y blocks on an interactive mise prompt
What happened
Running pkexec /usr/bin/omarchy-update -y (a privileged, non-terminal context - polkit dialog used instead of sudo) fails in two distinct ways:
Failure 1 - immediate crash:
/usr/sbin/omarchy-update-dev: line 7: OMARCHY_PATH: unbound variablepkexec does not preserve the calling user's environment, so OMARCHY_PATH (normally exported by the login shell) is unset. omarchy-update-dev runs with set -u and aborts before any packages are touched. omarchy-migrate guards this with ${OMARCHY_PATH:-/usr/share/omarchy} (line 31) but omarchy-update-dev does not.
Failure 2 - hidden prompt despite -y (after working around Failure 1 by exporting OMARCHY_PATH/HOME/SUDO_* in a wrapper):
Update mise tools
mise config files in /root are not trusted. Trust them?
Yes / No / AllThe run hangs forever. -y is documented as "a promise not to ask anything" (comment in omarchy-update), but omarchy-update-mise invokes MISE_MINIMUM_RELEASE_AGE=0 mise up which still prompts to trust root-owned configs in a pty nobody can see. Additionally process_manage/stdin is unavailable in this context, so the prompt cannot be answered at all.
Expected
omarchy-update-devshould use the same${OMARCHY_PATH:-/usr/share/omarchy}default asomarchy-migrate, so a scrubbed environment cannot kill the update.- In
-y/OMARCHY_UPDATE_UNATTENDED=1mode, mise should run non-interactively (e.g.mise up --yes,MISE_TRUSTED_CONFIG_PATHS, or skip the substep with a report - in keeping with "Steps that would need an answer report and move on").
Steps to reproduce
- From any non-interactive privileged context (pkexec, some automation harnesses):
pkexec /usr/bin/omarchy-update -y - Observe the OMARCHY_PATH crash in /tmp/omarchy-update.log.
- Export OMARCHY_PATH (wrapper) and rerun; the run gets to
omarchy-update-miseand blocks on the invisible trust prompt.
System details
- Omarchy 4.0.4-1 (x86_64, Hyprland, Wayland)
- Kernel: 7.2.5-3-omarchy
- App raised via pkexec; user confirmed via polkit dialog (agent-driven desktop session)
- Diagnostic evidence: /tmp/omarchy-update.log from both runs (exact texts quoted above)
Notes
The core update still succeeds if the mise step is terminated: pacman transaction and migrations complete BEFORE omarchy-update-mise runs. But the run exits non-zero and prints the generic "Something went wrong" banner, which is misleading for a run where everything but mise succeeded.
(Failure 1 is also reachable without pkexec: any env where OMARCHY_PATH is unset.)

## Title
`omarchy update` fails under pkexec/agent-driven runs: OMARCHY_PATH unbound, then `-y` blocks on an interactive mise prompt
## What happened
Running `pkexec /usr/bin/omarchy-update -y` (a privileged, non-terminal context - polkit dialog used instead of sudo) fails in two distinct ways:
**Failure 1 - immediate crash:**
```
/usr/sbin/omarchy-update-dev: line 7: OMARCHY_PATH: unbound variable
```
pkexec does not preserve the calling user's environment, so `OMARCHY_PATH` (normally exported by the login shell) is unset. `omarchy-update-dev` runs with `set -u` and aborts before any packages are touched. `omarchy-migrate` guards this with `${OMARCHY_PATH:-/usr/share/omarchy}` (line 31) but `omarchy-update-dev` does not.
**Failure 2 - hidden prompt despite -y** (after working around Failure 1 by exporting OMARCHY_PATH/HOME/SUDO_* in a wrapper):
```
Update mise tools
mise config files in /root are not trusted. Trust them?
Yes / No / All
```
The run hangs forever. `-y` is documented as "a promise not to ask anything" (comment in omarchy-update), but `omarchy-update-mise` invokes `MISE_MINIMUM_RELEASE_AGE=0 mise up` which still prompts to trust root-owned configs in a pty nobody can see. Additionally `process_manage`/stdin is unavailable in this context, so the prompt cannot be answered at all.
## Expected
- `omarchy-update-dev` should use the same `${OMARCHY_PATH:-/usr/share/omarchy}` default as `omarchy-migrate`, so a scrubbed environment cannot kill the update.
- In `-y` / `OMARCHY_UPDATE_UNATTENDED=1` mode, mise should run non-interactively (e.g. `mise up --yes`, `MISE_TRUSTED_CONFIG_PATHS`, or skip the substep with a report - in keeping with "Steps that would need an answer report and move on").
## Steps to reproduce
1. From any non-interactive privileged context (pkexec, some automation harnesses): `pkexec /usr/bin/omarchy-update -y`
2. Observe the OMARCHY_PATH crash in /tmp/omarchy-update.log.
