Omarchy

ProbeLabs65 findings · 95 requirements

A proof layer — requirements, tests and verified fixes — for two of Omarchy's subsystems: the application menu (launcher scripts, QML model, JSONC config, search and selection) and the lock screen (lock scripts, QML, PAM authentication). Scope is deliberately limited to those components of omacom/omarchy; the rest of the distribution is not covered.

omarchy update aborts: "Refusing to use an unsafe Omarchy update inhibitor state path" (locale-dependent stat %F rejects stock XDG_RUNTIME_DIR)revision 1 · captured 2026-09-28 21:23 UTC via poll

System details

Omarchy 4.0 dev checkout (e1614f2b, post #13323), kernel 7.2.5-4-omarchy, AMD Strix Halo APU, LANG=zh_CN.UTF-8 (default on this install).

What's wrong?

omarchy update -y aborts before the package upgrade with two copies of:

Refusing to use an unsafe Omarchy update inhibitor state path.
Something went wrong during the update! (exit code 1)

The stay-awake helper (bin/omarchy-update-stay-awake) is invoked by the real
update dispatch as the invoking user (non-root) with a non-tty stdin. The
XDG_RUNTIME_DIR boundary check rejects the stock systemd-logind layout and
refuses to proceed. This is the same security work as PR #9467 / #13323; it
regressed the default layout because the safety predicate compares against
locale-dependent output and is stricter than the standard layout allows.

Reproduced stably on a clean official checkout at e1614f2b:

Refusing to use an unsafe Omarchy update inhibitor state path.

Root cause (four defects in bin/omarchy-update-stay-awake)

  1. root_owned_parent_chain() does

read -r owner mode type < <(stat -Lc '%u %a %F' ...) then tests
[[ $owner == 0 && $type == "directory" ]]. Under LANG=zh_CN.UTF-8,
stat %F prints "目录" (the localized word for directory), so the
"directory" string compare is always false → every ancestor is rejected.
The -d / -L guards above already prove it is a real non-symlink
directory; the text compare is both redundant and locale-unsafe.

  1. Same function rejects any parent with group/world bits set via

! ((8#$mode & 022)) || return 1. But the standard layout has read-only
parents: /run (0755), /run/user (0755), / (0555). Only group/world
write access should be disallowed → mask should be & 002.

  1. start_locked()'s readiness wait is bounded only when

[[ -t 0 ]] (interactive). The real update calls the helper from a non-tty
child, so a stalled hand-off hangs start forever instead of timing out.

  1. signal_inhibitor() stops the held systemd-inhibit shell with a builtin

kill. That shell can run as root while stop runs as the invoking user, so
the kill fails EPERM and the sleep leaks. It should escalate through
passwordless sudo -n kill only when the target's owner != the caller's EUID.

Suggested fix

  • Drop the $type == "directory" comparison; keep the owner == 0 check plus

the existing -d / -L guards (or wrap that one stat call in LC_ALL=C).
- Relax the parent-chain mode test to reject only group/world write:
! ((8#$mode & 002)) || return 1.
- Bound the readiness wait for every non-root caller, not just tty ones:
if (( EUID != 0 && readiness_attempts >= 100 )); then ... fi.
- In signal_inhibitor(), read stat -Lc '%u' /proc/$inhibit_pid; if it
differs from ${EUID:-0}, use /usr/bin/sudo -n kill -s "$signal" -- ...,
else the builtin kill.

With all four applied, omarchy update -y proceeds cleanly through snapshot →
dev checkout → keyring → system packages → orphan removal (rc=0).

## What's wrong?
`omarchy update -y` aborts before the package upgrade with two copies of:

    Refusing to use an unsafe Omarchy update inhibitor state path.
    Something went wrong during the update! (exit code 1)

The stay-awake helper (`bin/omarchy-update-stay-awake`) is invoked by the real
update dispatch **as the invoking user (non-root)** with a non-tty stdin. The
`XDG_RUNTIME_DIR` boundary check rejects the *stock* systemd-logind layout and
refuses to proceed. This is the same security work as PR #9467 / #13323; it
regressed the default layout because the safety predicate compares against
locale-dependent output and is stricter than the standard layout allows.

### Root cause (four defects in bin/omarchy-update-stay-awake)
1. `root_owned_parent_chain()` does
   `read -r owner mode type < <(stat -Lc '%u %a %F' ...)` then tests
   `[[ $owner == 0 && $type == "directory" ]]`. Under `LANG=zh_CN.UTF-8`,
   `stat %F` prints **"目录"** (the localized word for directory), so the
   `"directory"` string compare is always false → every ancestor is rejected.
   The `-d` / `-L` guards above already prove it is a real non-symlink
   directory; the text compare is both redundant and locale-unsafe.

2. Same function rejects any parent with group/world bits set via
   `! ((8#$mode & 022)) || return 1`. But the standard layout has read-only
   parents: `/run` (0755), `/run/user` (0755), `/` (0555). Only group/world
   **write** access should be disallowed → mask should be `& 002`.

3. `start_locked()`'s readiness wait is bounded only when
   `[[ -t 0 ]]` (interactive). The real update calls the helper from a non-tty
   child, so a stalled hand-off hangs `start` forever instead of timing out.

4. `signal_inhibitor()` stops the held `systemd-inhibit` shell with a builtin
   `kill`. That shell can run as root while stop runs as the invoking user, so
   the kill fails EPERM and the sleep leaks. It should escalate through
   passwordless `sudo -n kill` only when the target's owner != the caller's EUID.

### Suggested fix
- Drop the `$type == "directory"` comparison; keep the `owner == 0` check plus
  the existing `-d` / `-L` guards (or wrap that one `stat` call in `LC_ALL=C`).
- Relax the parent-chain mode test to reject only group/world write:
  `! ((8#$mode & 002)) || return 1`.
- Bound the readiness wait for every non-root caller, not just tty ones:
  `if (( EUID != 0 && readiness_attempts >= 100 )); then ... fi`.
- In `signal_inhibitor()`, read `stat -Lc '%u' /proc/$inhibit_pid`; if it
  differs from `${EUID:-0}`, use `/usr/bin/sudo -n kill -s "$signal" -- ...`,
  else the builtin `kill`.

With all four applied, `omarchy update -y` proceeds cleanly through snapshot →
dev checkout → keyring → system packages → orphan removal (rc=0).
