Omarchy

ProbeLabs65 findings · 95 requirements

A proof layer — requirements, tests and verified fixes — for two of Omarchy's subsystems: the application menu (launcher scripts, QML model, JSONC config, search and selection) and the lock screen (lock scripts, QML, PAM authentication). Scope is deliberately limited to those components of omacom/omarchy; the rest of the distribution is not covered.

Bar freeze: anchored quickshell PanelWindows never repaint on Hyprland 0.56.2

Impact on Omarchy

The top bar renders exactly one frame at mount and then never updates. Symptoms
on a stock install:

  • The bar clock never ticks (center section also stays hidden: it is

revealed on hover, which requires a repaint).
- Asynchronous content never appears — custom widgets whose text/logo resolve
a frame "late" (e.g. process-stdout widgets, StdioCollector results) show
nothing even though their logic runs fine.
- Hover highlights do not appear; hide/show toggles produce exactly one repaint
per geometry change.

This bit me specifically with a custom module whose logo/text came back from an
async fetch: the module mounts and runs, but the bar only ever composites its
first frame, so the widget is invisible.

Root cause (upstream Quickshell)

Minimal repro (identical files except the anchors block) on this machine:

// anchored  — FROZEN
PanelWindow {
  width: 500; height: 40
  WlrLayershell.namespace: "repro-anchored"
  WlrLayershell.layer: WlrLayer.Top
  anchors { top: true; left: true; right: true }
  Timer { interval: 1000; running: true; repeat: true; triggeredOnStart: true
          onTriggered: clock.text = Qt.formatTime(new Date(), "hh:mm:ss") }
  Text { id: clock; ... color: "white" }
}
// floating — LIVE
// (same file with the anchors block removed)

Measured per-surface with compare -metric AE over the window's exact
layer-shell rect, grabbed 4 s apart, run in isolation:

windowregion AEresult
anchored~0frozen
floating1215live

Confirmed on both WlrLayer.Top and WlrLayer.Overlay, with and without
transparency/exclusionMode, and with explicit x/y.

The omarchy bar hits this because Bar.qml's BarPanel is anchored —
the documented standard quickshell bar pattern.

Environment

  • Omarchy on Arch, Hyprland 0.56.2 (commit efb50993780079460b0cbed1363e2166a2de1d9f)
  • Quickshell 0.3.1 (Arch package), native Wayland
  • Intel Iris Plus 640, single output eDP-1 2560x1600@60 scale 2

Upstream reference

Filed at https://github.com/quickshell-mirror/quickshell/issues/1130

Would help all omarchy users if the distro can pin/backport a fixed quickshell,
or document a workaround until upstream resolves it.

# Bar freeze: anchored quickshell PanelWindows never repaint on Hyprland 0.56.2

## Impact on Omarchy
The top bar renders exactly one frame at mount and then never updates. Symptoms
on a stock install:

- The bar **clock never ticks** (center section also stays hidden: it is
  revealed on hover, which requires a repaint).
- Asynchronous content never appears — custom widgets whose text/logo resolve
  a frame "late" (e.g. process-stdout widgets, `StdioCollector` results) show
  nothing even though their logic runs fine.
- Hover highlights do not appear; hide/show toggles produce exactly one repaint
  per geometry change.

This bit me specifically with a custom module whose logo/text came back from an
async fetch: the module mounts and runs, but the bar only ever composites its
first frame, so the widget is invisible.

## Root cause (upstream Quickshell)
Minimal repro (identical files except the `anchors` block) on this machine:

```qml
// anchored  — FROZEN
PanelWindow {
  width: 500; height: 40
  WlrLayershell.namespace: "repro-anchored"
  WlrLayershell.layer: WlrLayer.Top
  anchors { top: true; left: true; right: true }
  Timer { interval: 1000; running: true; repeat: true; triggeredOnStart: true
          onTriggered: clock.text = Qt.formatTime(new Date(), "hh:mm:ss") }
  Text { id: clock; ... color: "white" }
}
```
```qml
// floating — LIVE
// (same file with the anchors block removed)
```

Measured per-surface with `compare -metric AE` over the window's exact
layer-shell rect, grabbed 4 s apart, run in isolation:

| window | region AE | result |
|---|---|---|
| anchored | ~0 | frozen |
| floating | 1215 | live |

Confirmed on both `WlrLayer.Top` and `WlrLayer.Overlay`, with and without
transparency/`exclusionMode`, and with explicit `x`/`y`.

The omarchy bar hits this because `Bar.qml`'s `BarPanel` is anchored —
the documented standard quickshell bar pattern.

## Environment
