Original report
Hardware
- Model: LG Gram 17Z90TL-H.AUB6U3
- CPU: Intel Core Ultra 200V Series (Lunar Lake)
- Audio Codec: Realtek ALC298 (Subsystem: 1854:0557)
- Kernel: 7.2.3-arch1-3
- SOF Firmware: ADSPFW 2.14.1.1
- Topology loaded: sof-hda-generic-2ch.tplg
Symptom
No audio output from internal speakers despite all ALSA/PipeWire controls showing unmuted and at proper volume levels. Audio stream flows through SOF DSP (PCM state RUNNING, hw_ptr advancing) but no analog output reaches speakers. Microphone works fine.
Diagnosis
- PipeWire/WirePlumber stack running correctly, Speaker sink active and unmuted
- SOF driver detects codec but classifies node 0x17 as
line_outinstead ofspeaker_out:
autoconfig for ALC298: line_outs=1 (0x17/0x0/0x0/0x0/0x0) type:speaker
speaker_outs=0 (0x0/0x0/0x0/0x0/0x0)- Node 0x17 amp-out values read 0x00 at hardware level even when ALSA reports Speaker Playback Switch as on — SOF DSP handles volume internally
- Standard LG Gram ALC298 fix (node 0x20 hda-verb commands from Fedora/Ubuntu forums) did NOT work — those target older Raptor Lake models (Z90R series)
- Node 0x20 vendor coefficient was 0x7f4b on boot (amplifier gate latched in wrong state)
What Fixed It
Combination of hda-verb writes to nodes 0x17, 0x14, 0x0d, 0x03, 0x20 + GPIO toggling + PCI device remove/rescan caused the ALC298 internal amplifier to un-latch. After reboot, codec cold-started with node 0x20 coefficient at 0x7418 and speakers worked.
Caveat: This may not be deterministic. The permanent fix likely requires writing coefficient 0x7418 to node 0x20 via an HDA early-patch or udev rule at boot.
Suggested Permanent Fix
Create an HDA firmware patch or udev rule for LG Gram Lunar Lake models (17Z90TL, and likely other Z90T variants) that sets:
hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC0D0 0x20 0x500 0x1b
hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC0D0 0x20 0x477 0x7418at early boot before PipeWire starts.
